For those of you living in northport/East Northport.

I learned today via open houses that there are different sections of East Northport. One was called Bellcrest I think. If you live in Northport/East Northport, where are you about? Also, why do you like that area better than say another part of Northport/East Northport?

Sorry I totally sound like I am interviewing you people, but I live in Huntington and have no clue about the Northport area at all besides that I like the schools and it seems like a cute place to live.

Re: For those of you living in northport/East Northport.

I know I am in the minority but I DON'T like most of the Bellecrest area. We looked at houses in that area and many of the streets were very hilly, sometimes kinda narrow w/ cars parked on both sides of the road and the houses were a hodgepodge of styles. I just wasn't feeling it. I know most people love it but not me. We were committed to staying in Northprt schools though due to the excellent reputation of the district and the lower taxes than surrounding districts due to LIPA. The house we sold only has taxes of $3,400.

We already had a house so we didn't have to move but my DH bought it with his ex-wife (kinda creeped me out) so I did start looking as soon as we were married but could have lived there for a few years, hopefully after we had one child. Turns out I found a MAJOR fixer upper colonial on .5 acre just south of Pulaski in a beautiful neighborhood of other colonials about a week into my search. When I say this house needed EVERYTHING it did... all orognal 1971 and in DISGUSTING condition. It sat on the market last spring and summer for over 4 months when comparable style houses in this area were selling on the first day they were on the market.
I wanted a diamond in the rough because 1. I could get the price way down, which means less to finance and 2. we have family in the kitchen remodeling industry so I could have my home remodeled cheaper than most and get exactly what I wanted for the same price as buying someone elses taste.
I knew the owner was desperate because this house needed so much work noone out there was willing to take it on. Actually, our house was appraised for 200K MORE than I paid for it. Even doing all of the work, (all new electrical including rewiring entire house, heating and oil tank, gutting kitchen, vaulting ceiling, adding sliders and gutting 2.5 baths (including extending the master to fit a walk in shower and jacuzzi tub), all new interior doors, CAC, sheetrocking, floors, and so much more) we are still ahead than if we bought something in mint condition. We were lucky though because we have family connections and could live with IL's for 4 months. It was stressful but well worth it.

We really like our neighborhood and location and layout of the house are what really sold me. The neighborhood is very friendly. Our block is lined with very mature trees and I have town land behind me so it "looks like" our property goes on forever.

Just be patient. If you are committed to one town it might take you longer to find a house but right now there is so much out there.

Good luck, be patient but also be ready to move immediately if you find one you like.

Re: For those of you living in northport/East Northport.

I live in Bellecrest, so naturally I'm biased.Chat Icon Well, not really - lately I've been missing the south shore in general, and if I could live anywhere it would be Brooklyn, so I'm not super in love with E Npt in general. Here's my take:

Bellecrest feels country-like to me. I love it b/c it doesn't feel too "suburban". Most of the homes are older, say early 1900's. Not Victorians, but some Craftsman colonials and the like. It's hilly and twisty, and what I love is that it's kind of secluded - there's not much reason to drive around here unless you are going to one of the houses.

Most lots start at .25 acre, and there are varied home styles, but not many (I can think of 3) inappropriately huge houses verging on McMansion.

I think the best thing you could do is drive around and see for yourself. Good luck with your search!

Re: For those of you living in northport/East Northport.

We moved in to E. Northport just over a year ago. We really wanted the area. Our house is on Pulaski but we're okay with that because we are near a school yard and our house is set back a bit from the road. It needed a lot of work but it has lots of charm because it is over 100 years old. I love the area and the schools. We are really close to the Larkfield stores too. I've driven around Bellcrest and I have to say that I really like the area- I feel like it is more "secluded"- maybe one day!

In the end, if you really want E. Northport, just go by the actual house that you find- I think the whole area is really nice! Chat Icon

ETA: sorry- I didn't see Ms. G's post- I agree though about it being secluded! Chat Icon

I live in the Bellecrest area, too and I really like it. I think it feels more seculeded and less suburban, too. Some of the houses/lots are bigger, some are smaller, so I think you have to look at each individual house to see if it works for you. I really like the neighborhood and my neighbors.

BTW, if you want new construction, they just built 2 new houses right next to me -- the property is really small, though.

ETA: I think most of E. Northport is pretty nice, so I don't think you can go wrong. I love the area.
