Traveling with pets
Ok heres a dumb question... DH and I are thinking about going away to Florida... would you drive to florida with two dogs? Has anyone done that before and can share their experience? OR do you think I should just skip the whole driving to and from and take an airplane? (of course travel with me on my lap)

Re: Traveling with pets
My brother and SIL drove with their two dogs to FL a few times. My SIL's parents drive with their dogs too. I guess it depends on the dog.

Re: Traveling with pets
We've driven to Indiana (15 hours in a car) and New Hampshire (8 hours) with our two small dogs...they are good travelers...the only thing was it was warm when we were traveling so we couldn't leave them in the car so our meals were drive thru...and we couldn't really do any detour stops at stores or anything.

Re: Traveling with pets
I've traveled to Massachusetts (4 hours) with Petunia several times. No issues but it was only 4 hours each way.

Re: Traveling with pets
We just drove to Buffalo (7 hrs) with our 2 pups. They both got car sick going there. We had given them benadryl and other than the sickness it was fine.
On the way home only 1 got sick and it went much smoother. They were very well behaved in the car.
We got the back seat cover from Pet Smart and put their blanket/bed so they can curl up. Our biggest pup (and the youngest) we car harnessed her so she wouldn't be all over but she had plenty of room and relaxed all the way there.
Good luck, I know your drive is farther but it is possible to do.

Re: Traveling with pets
We have driven from NY to NC and back a bunch of times with our dogs. It does make the trip a little longer because you will need to stop more often to give the pups water and walk them so they can relieve themselves, but for us it is worth it to have our pups with us.
It is a long trip though (about 11 hours for us), so our boys get pretty anti-car for a week or two after each of these trips. I guess they are worried that each trip will end up being another 11 hour one! (but when they realize we are at the park or doggie day care, they get SOOO excited - lol)
ETA: We have a back seat doggie hammock, which the dogs like. Teemu likes to face towards the back of the car, which allows him to do this. Olli likes to try to get in the front, so it blocks him off in the back a bit more!

Re: Traveling with pets
Thanks so much everyone! It doesnt seem that bad... we were debating if we should do car or airplane... (with us on the cabin NOT below the plane !!!). We have taken 2 hour trips to PA which wasnt bad at all.. but I wasnt sure how a florida trip and back would be!
Thanks so much for all your input!

Re: Traveling with pets
we drove to florida with our two dogs and they were GREAT. we expected this from sophie, who had traveled with us by plane and car a zillion times. but even owen, our more unruly dog, behaved himself perfectly.
if you do fly with them, make sure you get them used to their carriers beforehand...
FM me if you want more info on prepping your dogs to travel on airplanes, i've done it a lot...

Re: Traveling with pets
if you take jet blue you have to sit with a dog in a separate aisle. so your dh in one aisle with a dog and you in another aisle with another dog.
if your dogs can handle a car ride take the dogs to florida by car. i think tilde took her dog to florida.
