Talk to me about Canine Cancer
Has anyone had success when their dog was treated for Cancer? My dog had chest x-rays and they came back clear, which is a good sign, but really all it means is that if she does have cancer they will still treat her.
What do they do for Canine Cancer treatment? And what was the cost? (for the record, I don't care if I have to sell my car, I will pay whatever I have to to help my dog, but I just want to know what price range I can expect.)

Do you remember the post I had a while ago about her anxiety? Well they kept trying to get me to put her on the anti-anxiety meds and I kept resisting. Last week she was at the vet AGAIN, and everything seemed to be getting somewhat better. The next day her leg broke out in these horrible looking hives, and her back leg by her butt where she licks looked like it was oozing. I knew she did not have time to chew on her leg. I have had her in bed with me, and I watch her like a hawk. I even set up a video camera to see if she was chewing on herself when I was not home.
So I took her back today, because no matter what I did it was not getting better, and that is when the vets said that they think she has cancer. She had blood work that will be coming back tomorrow and her biopsy is on Wednesday.
I am just heartbroken, but I am so happy that I went with my gut and did not put her on the meds. I knew something was wrong. I am now afraid I am going to be in labor when I have to take her in for the surgery.
I just keep praying that it is a bad infection, but the vet kept saying he thinks it is cancer.

Oh yes, I do recall that post of yours. Now I understand.
Did they speak of surgery with you? Maybe they can remove the cancerous growth area? Did htey do a biopsy yet?

Re: Talk to me about Canine Cancer
Our rottie had lymphoma. We did one round of chemo and he went into remission for 6 months. We did another round but it didn't work and we had to put him down a month later.
He was very young (4 years old) so I think that his form of cancer was very aggressive.
What we were told is that chemo does not affect dogs the way it affects humans. They don't get sick or stop eating or lose their fur. It just makes them feel better. The flip side to that is, cancer in dogs cannot be cured. They can only go into remission and it's a matter of when, not if, the cancer will return. It's so sad, but in all the stories I've read, it's true. I think there are dogs that can be in remission for 5 years or more but in the end, the cancer will come back.
If you want a recommendation, we saw Dr. Bailey at LIVS in Plainview and I absolutely loved him. He was the kindest man, and so knowledgable and helpful.
Good luck

The biopsy is tomorrow and they said they really can't tell me anything until then. I just hope that the blood tests come back with some good news today.

Thanks for the information LB, and the recommendation. If I can get 5 more years with her, I will be over the moon. I am just not ready to say goodbye.
