Anyone live in Albany?
Hoping to meet up with a friend that I re-connected with on Facebook early next year.
We were thinking of meeting in Albany.
Any suggestions for a hotel that is centrally located? We probably won't rent a car. So, a hotel that is near nice restaurants, shopping, and maybe a spa (for a massage and facial) would be great.
TIA

Re: Anyone live in Albany?
I had friends I visited who went to college there....... I don't remember it that clearly but what I DO remember is Wolf Road being a heavily populated road with lots of stuff to do, if I am remembering correctly. I'm sure there are hotels on/near there. While you're there you should check out the very large Crossgates Mall.... and I remember there being lots of chain restaurants. It sort of reminded me of Westbury! (Friday's, Macaroni Grill, Outback......)
One piece of advice is don't stay in downtown Albany. It's not the best area, from what I recall!
Sorry if I wasn't much help!!

Re: Anyone live in Albany?
I went to school in Albany...I would stick to the down town area if you wont have a car. Cabs are pretty inexpensive though and the mall and shopping isnt down town. If you want good resturants and bars its all downtown closer to the captial. Two resturants down there I love is Prime 667 and The pump station.
Edit: If you like Mexican food you HAVE to try Bombers!!!

Re: Anyone live in Albany?
i was just in Albany in the end of November for a Phish show. Don't go downtown. It's not the best area. The Clarion hotel is in a good area but the hotel is a dive don't stay there LOL. There are a bunch in the area of SUNY Albany that seemed nice and safe

Does your brother know about the Center Square area of Albany?

What about the Desmond? I went to school just outside of Albany and my parents used to stay here and they loved it!

The Desmond
Is the Desmond centrally located...near restaurants and things to see?
We won't be renting a car, so we'll be walking or taking cabs.
TIA

Re: Anyone live in Albany?
Are you looking to stay in downtown Albany or is slightly outside OK? The reason that I'm asking is that Wolf Road in Colonie has a nice Marriott with restaurants and a mall nearby.
Also, what about staying up in Saratoga? There are nicer hotels, B&Bs, spas, and restaurants IMO.

My friend might take the train (Amtrak?) from Buffalo to Albany. I'm not sure where the train station is.
I'll be flying into Albany.
I was hoping to find a hotel that is centrally located, since we won't be renting a car...a hotel near nice restaurants (not too loud so we can catch up), near shopping, and near sites to see...in a nice, safe neighborhood.

Re: Anyone live in Albany?
I would reconsider renting a car...You will pay more in cab fees getting around than you will for a rental. The Wolf Road area is just like Long Island, as another poster said, and you know how a car is needed on LI!
I agree that the Downtown area is not appealing....It is filled with homeless people Lots of crime as well.
Saratoga Springs is only a 20 minute ride from Albany....A much nicer place to spend a few days reonnecting with your friend. Spas, restaurants and all centered in a town which looks a bit like Huntington Village. Quaint and lovely. my advice is to rent a car, forget about ALbany and use Priceline to name your own Price on a hotel in Saratoga Springs. THe savings using Priceline will more than cover the $$ for the car.
Check out: www.biddingfortravel.com
Explains bidding for rooms....I can help if yoy have other questions....Have done it many times.

Sorry, I didn't answer you other question in the previous post. The Desmond is in a great location (right off the Northway) but only if you have a car.
If you're flying into Albany then I would stay right on Wolf Road in Colonie. It's right next to the airport in a nice, safe neighborhood. There are tons of restaurants and the Colonie Center Mall to shop at. Also, cabs are REALLY inexpensive so if you want to check out the nightlife in downtown Albany it wouldn't be a big deal. I would recommend the Marriott which is right on Wolf Road. HTH!
