long term disability ?

is anyone familiar with LTD? below is what my plan states, i'm applying for it for 2010 but if i get pregnant within the next few months i'm not sure if the ltd would kick in (if needed). is pregnant considered an pre-existing condition? i want to call the plan but having trouble locating a phone #.

Pre-Existing Conditions
The LTD Insurance Plan does not provide benefits for any Total Disability or Partially Disabled which:
?? is caused by or results from a pre-existing condition; and
?? begins in the first 12 months immediately after your effective date of coverage, unless you received no treatment of the condition for any 12 consecutive months after your effective date of coverage.
“Pre-existing condition” means a condition resulting from an Injury or Sickness for which you are diagnosed or received treatment within 12 months prior to your effective date of coverage.

Re: long term disability ?

Pregnancy is not considered a disability, you cannot apply for disability for being pregnant.
You can get short term disability if you have a c-section and cannot return to work.

Re: long term disability ?

You have to talk to your HR department about applying for state benefits then. Your health insurance does not normally pay out disability benefits, Social Security does. Unless you have AFLAC (quack quack)....

I would contact the insurance company directly.

I applied for long-term disability prior to getting pregnant with that thought in mind...and your rates as a female will be higher for that reason.

There are many "pre-existing" conditions & they can reject coverage for people for a slew of reasons. I know of people who can't get coverage from any company due to GI issues. I had to do a physical and get bloodwork (for HIV, Hep C, Cholesterol, ect). They DID ask if I was pregnant.

If it's from work: it could be another issue, but may change if you lose/are terminated from your job.

I know I pay for Unum, in addition to my medical insurance. Unum will provide disability if I end up being (heaven forbid) unable to work after delivery. I don't know the details, but every mom at work told me I should take it if I planned on having kids.
