Any advice - Diesel is a counter theif
He surfs the counters and steals! He only steals food off the counters when we are home and food is out, but when we arent home he takes odd things. Like the baby wipes package or a magazine. He only half chews them.
So - right now when we are home, (I got this idea online) I attach a piece of food to a string which is attached to an empty soda can filled with coins. He takes the food off the counter which knocks the cans off and scares him and he drops the food. The important part is to then pick up the food before he gets a chance to eat it after he's dropped it.
But I wonder what I can do while I am not home to keep him from stealing. Sometimes I am amazed at how far this dog can reach! I dont have a cluttered countertop but I do have stuff on there.
tips? advice? comments?

Maggie is a counter surfer in the kitchen, on the dining table, and on the bathroom counters. She never takes anything from the low tables that she can easily reach though.
I've started spraying her with a water bottle everytime she jumps and I don't stop till she gets down. It has def. lessened....hopefully it'll completely stop after some more time.

Rub vicks vapor rub around the perimeter of the counters until he learns. Most dogs hate the smell of it and he won't want to get close to it.

That's funny because I just read that you can do that or tie a piece of hot dog to a string and then a the string to a rat trap. The rat trap should be way out of reach but once the hot dog is pulled even a little bit, the trap snaps and startles the dog.
The person who employed it has had success with this in a very short period of time.
Obviously, keeping food and medication off the counter will do it too, my sister has to do this. Her Lab ate an entire loaf of bread in the time it took her to turn her back, wash her hands and dry them! Thank God he was ok.

OMG, I would so not try the rat trap thing! I would be too worried.
I have no advice, D, my dogs are too small to reach counters so I have no clue.

we put cookie trays on the edges of the counter so when the dog jumped up she would knock the trays off and the make quite a sound hitting the floor!! Since then she hasn't been on the counter!!

he steals anything! When I am not home, there is no food out. He will take anything I may have left too close to the edge. A package of baby wipes, a magazine anything. I am leaning more towards maybe its seperation anxiety. Its hard to tell.
When I am home: sometimes he gets excited and will try to chew Katie's toys, other times there are a million toys around and he doesnt touch them. He will steal food off the counters/table if he thinks he can reach it and I leave the room.
When I am not home: I can almost gaurantee something will be chewed when I get home. Stuff he doesnt normally chew when I am home. Like the baby wipes package, a blanket, just odd things. And def little toys of DD's if left out.
Needless to say, my house is spotless lately

Yup, I feel your pain. I don't think it's anxiety though, it's probably just boredom. Since he can't play with Murray, he's looking for something to occupy him.
Not only do we keep everything off the floor and surfaces, I also don't keep anything breakable on top of surfaces that aren't bolted to the wall. We have no kids, but our house is baby proof!
We have a wide variety of chew toys, regular toys, bones, and puzzle toys to keep him occupied. For straight chewing, I like actual bones (I got them from Save-A-Pet's store in Port Jeff) and I'm careful with Nylabones because they can form sharp edges and cut his gums, making them bleed.

until we get this allergy thing under control I am hesitant to buy chew toys. I did get a list from Nylabone with imitation meat based bones, so i bought one of those. I also give him stuff to gnaw on throughout the day. Sweet potatoes and carrots usually. Last night they had the stems of the brocolli. He has gone through 3 different chew toys that I have tried (the rubber ones) b/c he is such a strong chewer. (Also b/c he is a big dog, these toys are costing me $15-$20 each) !

its ok. I notice the more he scratches, the more he smells. I had to switch vets (the rescue wants me to see their vet) so I ran out of the steroid to keep him from itching, so for hte past 3 days he is scratching like crazy. He has a vet appt today so he should get some relief while they do more tests. The previous vet said its clear he is allergic to something, we have to figure out what. It's not normal pollen in the air that is causing this b.c the pollen counts are very low right now.
