WWYD re dog park - another dog humping your dog
Lets say you go to a dog park, lots of them around, everyone's getting along fine. You start to notice another dog trying to hump yours. The other dog doesn't appear to be aggressive but it is a dominance/training issue so it's a worry.
This happens at least 10 more times. Your dog is doing the right thing - jumping away or sitting down - not going after the other dog.
The other dog's owner says nonchalant things like - "Stop that. You're a bad boy." but doesn't get up or make any physical move to stop her dog.
What do you do/say? Do you think it's just a necessary risk while you're at a dog park? Say something to the owner about controlling their dog? Leave?

I don't have a dog - but can I ask, do dogs do this even after they have been spayed and neutered? Because I cannot imagine bringing a dog to a dog park that hasn't been fixed (the other dog, obviously not Brinkley )

Re: WWYD re dog park - another dog humping your dog
This actual happen on a playdate with my cousins dog. I was very freaked out and didnt say anything at first but couldnt stand to watch my dog just sit there and take it
So i got up and stepped in between every time the dog tried to go near mine.
I would do the same thing in a dog park

As far as I can tell, I think it is pretty common. I try not to say anything until it gets to the point that Brutus is going to be humped for his entire stay at the park LOL then I try to bring him over to me and get him to run or something so the dog will lose interest.

Hmmm tough one. Although I think she should stop her dog or leave, I dont know if asking her to "make" him stop will work. So I would probably just leave.

Re: WWYD re dog park - another dog humping your dog
Teemu has humped at the dog park. It is the strangest thing cause it is only doodles (Goldendoodle, Labradoodle), so when we see one there, we know we have to be vigilant in watching him so if he does hump we can correct the behavior (and stop it ASAP!).
So being on the other end of the issue, I don't think it would be wrong to say something. I would be polite about it, and simply ask that the owner try to keep his dog's humping to a minimum because it is impacting your dog's fun! If he knows you notice (how could you not?) and it irritates you, perhaps he will put a little more effort into keeping his dog off of yours?
Good luck!

Re: WWYD re dog park - another dog humping your dog
i think its common and normal among the dogs so I would just let it be. It my dog was really bothered by it i would try to bring him to the other side of the park away from the dog or i would just leave. I dont think i would expect the owner to do much b/c dogs will be dogs KWIM?

Yup, sure do. That's why it's not just about them having those hormones, I learned. The first time Brinkley met my friend's dog, we were at the park and everything was great. When we got back to my house, Brinkley tried to hump him! Mainly because we were now on his turf and he felt the need to show him who was boss.
After he was fixed, we went to their house. And THEIR dog tried to hump Brinkley! Once they had visited each other's domains more than once, the humping stopped. Not without us correcting them each time though. My command was "OFF!" when he did it.

That's funny because it was a huge black Poodle that was humping him!
The dog didn't seem aggressive at all, so when it happened, I would call Brinkley to me, pull his collar away from the other dog, run and make him chase me to get away from it.
But it was persistent! I was standing next to another woman and when the poodle did it again, the owner said to the woman next to me, "You can just pull him off!" and the woman said with a laugh, "You want ME to pull him off? I don't think so!"
After that the owner started saying to her dog, "You're being bad, we're going to go home!" and it took another 3 humps and 10 minutes for her to leave.
It wasn't a big deal, I wasn't upset. Just curious what other people would do in my situation.

Re: WWYD re dog park - another dog humping your dog
I have been in a similar situation but it was not humping that was going on...a bunch of dogs...little and small...were ganging up on my dog. My dog is not little but he is not aggressive at all. So when this happened my DH and I walked over to the situation and started to get inbetween all of the dogs to get my dog out of the situation. One of the owners of the other dog got mad because we shooed his dog away. Once that happened we left and I refuse to bring my dog back to any dog parks.
But back to the humping problem...I would step in between the two dogs and distract my dog. If it kept happening I would politely ask the owner to take control of their dog. If that still didn't work then I would just take my dog and leave.

Re: WWYD re dog park - another dog humping your dog
i don't think its an issue at all. it's a dog showing who is the boss 9 times out of 10. as long as it doesn't get aggressive, i wouldn't even do anything. my dogs all try and hump each other when play fighting but i just knock them off each other. i don't think it's a thing to yell at someone and say control your dog. :-/ that's just me though

Re: WWYD re dog park - another dog humping your dog
That's funny... I wonder if poodles are predisposed to dominant behaviors?
I guess I'll stick to one on one playdates and my retriever meetup group. Brinkley didn't find many dogs to engage in play that day anyway.

yes they do and strangest of all i have a female dog that does this. sometimes she gets confused and will hump the other dogs head. (she only does it to my other dog, not a strange dog). its an absolute hoot to watch! shes not aggressive at all. its just a dominance thing.

like you said, it is a sign of dominance and the owner should step in and control their dog or leave

I also think that after the first time the owner should have done something - just because that is what I would have done.
Fine, let him exert his dominance for a few minutes if that is what he feels he needs to do, but then enough is enough.
Which dog park did you go to? We have yet to take Amber to one, but now that classes are over she misses having playtime with a lot of dogs! (Although I will beware poodles!!)

Re: WWYD re dog park - another dog humping your dog
Megan BEWARE the poodles!
I joined a group on Meetup.com for Lab and Golden owners and it was something they put together to meet at the new dog park in Old Bethpage Village Restoration. I wanted to try it out and meet someone who I knew from other message boards but have never met.
Tomorrow we have a meetup at someone's house in Kings Park which is much closer to home. I hope we all have a good time and make some new friends!
In cooler weather, I usually go to Blydenburgh park because it's the closest one to me but rarely go in the fenced dog park area. We usually walk the trails though, Brinkley goes crazy for it.

I live in KP!! Sounds like I should check out this group. Haha.
We have been thinking about Blydenburgh too, but I was more inclined to do the trails so that my DH and I can enjoy it too. Thanks!

Re: WWYD re dog park - another dog humping your dog
It's probably going to wind down a bit now that it's getting colder but here's the group: Meetup.com Lab/Golden group
The meetup for tomorrow is full since they had a max of 10 people/dogs and there's nothing else scheduled. But if you ever wanted to have a doggie playdate one day, we're game.

Re: WWYD re dog park - another dog humping your dog
If the owner did not get the dog off mine I would be doing something to stop it.. There is a correction noise I make to correct lola.. I wish you couild hear it but sounds like AH AH quick and loud.. I have had this issue and I KNOW for sure the other dog was NOT neutered because I saw the balls and there was actually semen on my poor 9 month old lola.. I was wild I left very very upset.. I was a new dog owner at the time and didnt have the confidence I HAVE TODAY.. I would now never stand for this ever.. I am the dominant pack leader in the dog park now.. I refused to stand there anymore and let my dog get tortured.

Re: WWYD re dog park - another dog humping your dog
I've been on both sides of this. Jackson tries to hump on occassion and the second that happens we pack up and we are outta there. If another dog humps him, I let it go but if it happens a lot then we leave. I don't say anything to the other owner, it's not worth an arguement. And I think it would be an arguement b/c obviously the other owner thinks nothing of it if he doesn't correct it.
