Question about possible dog fight

Most of you know I just adopted (a month ago) a 70lb Golden. At his previous home he was bullied a lot by one of their dogs, an Akita.

I have a 30lb cockapoo. He has dominance issues and its a constant struggle to keep him in check. He is always barking when he is uncomfortable with something and he nips sometimes. So, he just started nipping at Diesels paws within the past couple of days. No matter how many times I try to get him to stop, this is who he is. One of the many issues he has. Diesel always ignored it.

Well - today I was dancing to a song on Noggin for my daughter Chat Icon . Diesel got excited and started to jump a little towards me. Murray , as usual, barked at him. however, this time when he nipped at Diesel, Diesel jumped on top of Murray and looked like he was biting him. It was hard to tell b/c it was almost like when you watch a cartoon and they are spinnign in quick circles. It was happening so fast. I just heard a lot of aggressive growling and his mouth was def on Murray. It looked like he was biting him. Murray was growling back , no yelping. It felt like forever but I think I was in shock. I called Diesel and he stopped.

Murray seems to be fine , no blood but he is def shaken up.

I feel like Diesel was just fed up with Murray constantly bullying him. I also feel like if Diesel was seriously attacking Murray, would Murray have some wounds since there is a big weight difference. But I have never seen this side of Diesel and it scares me that this might happen with the two of them again. My DD was standing right next to them.

Re: Question about possible dog fight

omg Denise...

I think poor Diesel just is getting fed up with being bullied by Murray. I think any dog would. I have to say I am surprised Murray did so well all along with Diesel but then again yI think ou always said he never had dog/dog issues so much.

My gut instinct says maybe Murray got what he needed, to be put in his place? But I dont know...I am not sure. My dogs fight violently but I am used to it, plus my male was here a year before my female (a 10 week old at the time) was brought in. She bullies him and sometimes he fights back, sometimes he doesnt. But they are used to each other, grew up together, kwim?

I am not sure what to do or say. I think I would give it some time and if it happens again, this can't be good for Diesel to feel stress over Murray nipping him, etc. I think it's good they didn't draw blood, b/c they surely could have. My dogs have never made each other bleed, but my female did bite all over my male dog's back when she was a pup, he had scabs all over. Chat Icon But she was a teething pup...

I truly think Diesel tried to show Murray he won't allow him to bully him anymore and thats all he was trying to show. B/c surely he COULD have hurt him badly, he is much bigger, right?
but I have to say, yes, I would be concerned that either one of them could snap and reallly have it out, with each other or God forbid DD is in the middle and gets the tail end of it.

How has Murray been in general, with you both, DD, Diesel? I would like to know more about how he has been...adjusting, etc. I am curious to know what others will say.Chat Icon

i do feel like that hopefully put Murray in check a little bit. It just scares me to see that side of him b/c he is such a big dog. It wasnt like Murray was just walking by and Diesel attacked him for no reason. Murray provoked him. So I guess I should just let it go and see if Murray got the hint!

As far as how he has been - same. He spends his entire day trying to be in charge. He is also nipping at Katie. She has never cried so I dont think he is hurting her but it is so unacceptable. DH has had it with Murray. He is at his wits end. So - we just deal. Its an everyday process. I have such a small house that I cannot keep him and Katie apart. There is only one main room that we all hang out in during the day. So sometimes if she goes near him, he nips her in her hand. Its happened, I am ashamed to say. If he was a big dog, he would have had to go a long time ago. Its a shame too b/c he is such a handful but on the other end of the spectrum he is such a smart, highly trained dog. He doesnt even need a leash to walk around the block, he doesnt run off the front lawn, not a lot of dogs can do that. KWIM?

That's the biggest indicator to me that Diesel was correcting him. Murray already thinks he's the pack leader in your home, as evidenced by his nipping and barking. You bring a new animal into the home, one that doesn't control his food, and they are going to have to sort out any changes to the pack order. Especially since Murray feels like he owns your house and you brought another dog in 'without his permission'. Chat Icon Really, though, that's how they think.

Diesel knows he's beneath you, your husband, and DD. Murray doesn't. If Diesel really wanted to hurt Murray, he could have and probably would have. Consider that most retrievers have a 'soft mouth' built into their genes. Some use it like a baby does, to feel things and learn about them. Some, to play. Some, to provide a reminder that they have teeth too and that the offender should be wary.

I am no expert, but I really think Diesel was giving him a lesson and that it probably won't be the last he teaches Murray.

It's clear Murray is the source of the concern. You agree that he has dominance issues and that it's a constant struggle but I never knew how that came about and what you have to do to keep him in line. Is there a thread somewhere? Or can you share how you overcome his challenges?

Since we have no other dogs, when we got Brinkley, he was really unsocialized prior to coming home to us so I wanted that for him too. For him to be taught how to be polite with other dogs, learn doggie etiquette. Gerty and Misty, Kara and Scout helped me to start that. We had a doggie GTG and let me tell you, Misty did more for Brinkley than I ever could. I had to steel myself for the teeth and chasing and growling and snapping. She was not happy with him and his puppy exuberance and I was SO happy she put him in his place. Neither was hurt. It took a couple more meetings but I'm proud to say that he learned how to behave in the past year and is much better at it now.

I'm not saying Diesel will fix Murray's attitude, I'm just saying that from Diesel's point of view, he's probably just doing his job. I do think that Murray has a lot of work to do though and needs to be taught how to be respectful to everyone in your home.

I understand Denise. My male dog has nipped at DD, a few times when excited in play when he sees us playing, a few times in anger/annoyance if she was overexcited and he didnt want to be bothered. I try to make him do a "command" when he does that, such as sit, down etc. He does do it. But that's just the way he is. We have had a trainer and I truly believe there is not much I can do about it. This is why I always keep a close watch and things will just get a lot better when DD is larger. So it takes a lot of work, I understand, belive me I do. Only thing is my dog isn't food or toy possessive. I know what you mean about Murray, my dogs could NEVER walk off a leash. I will tell you what I think about my dog, and Murray. They are brats. I call my dog a brat, he is just very spoiled and bratty....I think maybe, just maybe Murray will learn he can't mess with Diesel. So just be wary right now....don't let DD get between them. Diesel could SURELY have hurt Murray if he wanted....so I really think Diesel did what he had to do.

I am not sure what else to say, only time will tell. Chat Icon

Re: Question about possible dog fight

to me it sounds like they were playing. maybe diesel was putting him in his place a little, but i wouldn't be worried. my dogs all wrestle around and 2 of them making aggressive sounds but they aren't hurting each other. it's just rough play. plus i think the noise is for intimidation haha. the 2 that do this, are the 2 little ones. my pit just gets beat up and loves it
