Need some Thanksgiving ideas!
So this year, my mom, brother, and brother's GF are coming out to use for what we call "fakesgiving" (aka the weekend before Thanksgiving).
We're pretending it's really Thanksgiving since I can't fly this year for Thanksgiving OR Christmas... and the weekend before is much cheaper for them to fly!
So it will just be 5 of us.
I need some ideas for appetizers and desserts.
For dinner, we're having turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, baked macaroni & cheese, sweet potatoes with marshmallow, green bean casserole.
We don't want to go too heavy on apps!
For dessert - please NO pumpkin suggestions! I'd ideally like to do 1 chocolatey thing and 1 fruity thing.
TIA!

Re: Need some Thanksgiving ideas!
For apps I would do Roasted Shrimp Cocktail. Ina Garten's recipe. The sauce is really good. If you don't want to do the cocktail .. you can do some seared Sea Scallops and plate them on a pool of parsley pesto. Yum.
You could also have some crudite with artichoke dip (or any dip) for a starter.
Desserts.. I'd say go for Ghiradelli double chocolate brownie cookies. They are insane. And they disappear.. even when people say they are stuffed. I would also do persimmon cookies.. because persimmon IS the holiday fruit and because persimmon cookies are awesome and a little different AND because visually it would look pretty to have the dark cookies nested next to the lighter cookies. For a citrusy and refreshing bite, I'd have some lemon bars or a lemon tart to round out the dessert table.

Re: Need some Thanksgiving ideas!
Just recently tried a Hot Corn Dip very similar to this one: Hot corn dip and it was SO GOOD. People loved it!
We do the baked brie too, but not in pastry and with a combo of pecans, brown sugar and whiskey on top...SO delicious. Also works if you cut it in little cubes and do it in the pre-made phyllo cups. yum!
As for desserts, there are SO MANY fun things around now! I love pumpkin but I know you said no pumpkin....I would definitely do something apple as the fruit, either a pie or a crisp, b/c my family would rebel without it. As for chocolate, those brownie cookes are awesome, or chocolate cookies with white chips and pecans (can you tell I like pecans!), or something else simple like that. I always like to have something pie-like and something cookie/brownie like.
OR a cheesecake that's fancy, DH made a chocolate stout one that was really good, and also made a vanilla almond one that was awesome....so many options!
