Re: Me again...do you talk to your neighbors?

We talk to our neighbors in the how are you doing and it is nice to see you type of sence, but we don't hang out with them socially. I think it is hard to make new friends in a new community. DH and I moved out to NJ this past November and since it was so cold out it was hard to really get to know our neighbors since no one was outside much. I am hoping that with warmer weather we might have an occasion to get to know some of them better. DH and I were thinking of joining a temple to try to meet new people out here. We go back to LI a lot to see our friends.

I will add that when it snowed a lot my neighbors knew I was in a car accident and helped shovel us out b/c I could not do it and my DH was away. So we really lucked out in the nice neighbors category, but yes it is quiet here.

That's what I'd like to do, but DH gives me a hard time about joining a temple. I told him okay for now, but once we have kids... that's it, we're joining.

When we first moved in we barely talked to anyone. mostly hi and bye - I felt weird around them since they all seemed so close (there are like 3-4 families that seem to be close - they do train, dinners, play dates with kids, etc.) Most were around our age - give or take 5 years or so but everyone has kids and seemed in a different place then us. The rest of the block including my 2 immediate neighbors are older (like 70+) and we mostly were hi and bye with them too. Also, sounds weird to say but we are a different religious background from everyone on the block and comments were passed (some in joking) that made me feel we didn't fit in.

Since I had Kevin and now that the weather is warm and I am home more - -Kevin plays in front of the house - I am finding more people talk to me and I am more social. ALthough I seem to be making more friends with their live in nannies than the nieghbors. not sure I would spend time outside the block with most people but it is nicer to have that kind of neighborhood feel.

We are very close to the neighbors on either side of us! But there is house a couple houses over that is a rental and quite frankly we have all had it with them. Our neighbor on the next block was coming over to see me today with her daughter in the stroller and this SOB almost ran into her head on with his freaking speeding ATV- he blew 2 stop signs. I really am on my last legs with him. I was out for a walk with my daughter when I got home from work and he was up and down the blocks again on his ATV blowing all the stop signs and running up on people's lawns. I hate him Chat Icon

One of the reasons we are moving is bc our neighborhood is VERY quiet. Which can be nice, but we don't socialize at all. There aren't many couples our age and everyone keeps to themselves. I am beginning to wonder if it is just where we live or am I going to find this anywhere I go!?

neighborhooods are sooo mixed these days...

with the old people hanging on, a bunch of people selling and new home owners...

i seriously don't think i would move because of the above reason...

with the market the way it is....

This is how my neighborhood is...

On one side and across the street are older people, and the other side and diagonally are families with school age children.

We just wave and exchange pleasantries with everybody.

Do Yard Work!!!

We have been in our house for almost a year - my DH was always outside raking up leaves and stuff - and people didn't say much. Well -the sat before Easter we pulled out some bushes that were in front of our house and people literally came out of the wood work to say hello.

They were lending us tools, offering to help, offering to watch our house if we went away. It was crazy! I think - believe it or not - the bushes were blocking the house for privacy - I guess it send a welcoming message or something that we took them down - some one even stopped by at 7 am Easter Morning (we were outside admiring our work) to introduce himself and tell us we did a nice job.

We talk to our neighbors on one side (who are awesome Chat Icon you know who you are!) but the other side is the neighborhood disaster family. You know, the ones with the regular police visits, the ones who steal Big Wheels and throw kegs into treesChat Icon . We also talk to an elderly couple across the street.

Ditto! Chat Icon
oh and we talk to the couple with the 3 little girls too.

Not really. Just hi and bye type stuff. DH grew up in this house so the older neighbors are all the parents of people we went to high school with and it's kinda weird to befriend them and the other families that are "newer" to the neighborhood have kids that are older than Sarah.

No, not really. We just moved here in October and I'm quite shy. Also, most of the people on this block are older. I'm a bit disappointed because right around the corner are a ton of younger couples and children. However, it is my dream block and my dream house so I don't really mind.

I will wave and say hello, but chatting? Not really. Neither of us is outgoing. People in our 'hood are very friendly though- one of these days I'll work up the nerve. Chat Icon

Re: Me again...do you talk to your neighbors?

we now have a good relationship w/ our neighbors across the street. It was a rocky start because of their barking dogs, we brawled about it but now we made up. my neighbor on the left is a snowbird, friendly though. our neighbor on the right is actually the son of the owner who passed away last year. we just watch the house for him, he lives out of state. Thats it for our immediate neighbors. I'm on the board of directors for our homeowners association so I met alot of people & made friends through that. everyone around waves though & in the nice weather there are always lots of people walking, I always say hi to everyone. In the summer we have community beach parties & stuff so we hang out with the neighbors then.

Re: Me again...do you talk to your neighbors?

OMG, we talk to our neighbors every day! Granted, we live in Philadelphia, so that may be the difference. When we moved in, about 10 of our neighbors stopped by to introduce themselves and they gave us a HUGE welcome to the neighborhood gift basket filled with goodies. We have dinner with a few of the couple's on our street at least once a month. In fact, we're looking to upgrade to a bigger house right now and we're feeling sooooo guilty for abandoning our neighbors Chat Icon

Yes, we love out neighbors! Half of them are older, but younger couples keep moving in to the neighborhood. Our next door neighbors are great!

Re: Me again...do you talk to your neighbors?

Our motto is tall fences make the best neighbors. Everyone on our block keeps to themsleves and we love it. Our house is surrounded by bushes which we love! We have borrowed stuff from our neighbors and vice versa but besides for that everyone mids their own business

We are friendly with all our whole neighborhood - except the guy next door to me. We don't really socialize with them though - have plenty of friends for that.

We moved here in December. We don't talk much to our neighbors. Most of them have young kids or teenagers and are older than us. I don't feel like we can relate much.
