Anyone's dog ever have to wear a cone? Update! NEED HELP!!!
Maximus somehow broke his nail yesterday! It broke so bad that the quick is completely exposed! The vet said he got lucky b/c the quick didn't get cut, just the nail around it broke off. So at the moment he won't have to be sedated to cut the nail! They wrapped his paw so he won't lick it and will hopefully start to heal. But they put the big plastic cone around his head! The poor dog is so confused and scared! Other than bumping into everything, he won't eat, won't drink, won't go to the bathroom! And hasn't stopped pouting and crying! And he is able to reach the wrapped paw anyway! My poor baby But it took 3 people to get this cone on him! He is a 70 pound boxer. They said not to take it off. he will get over it and get used to it. Just to give him a day or so. But the poor dog is so upset and miserable! Any suggestions?
update..NEED HELP?! he peed in his crate and now the bandage is wet with pee and he his flipping out! the cone is not preventing him from reaching his foot! Should I remove the bandage? Vet isn't in today and I can't bring him to the 24 hour care place b/c I have a 6 month old! my husband isn't around today! HELP!!!

Re: Anyone's dog ever have to wear a cone?
My pup got stitches in his ear and had to wear a cone fore 5 weeks.
He was fine with the cone it was the bandages on his head that bugged him the most.
Is your dog crate trained? I left mine in his crate when I went out so he couldn't reach inside and scratch his ear.
Your pup should get used to it. Try walking him on a leash to get him to go instead of just letting him in the back that worked for me.
Good Luck!

I saw a soft cone at Petco the other day. It looked a lot more comfortable than the hard plastic one.

Can you call the 24 hour vet and explain the situation? I'm sure they could just give you some advice over the phone.
If it was me, I would probably take the bandage off and put a clean one on.

ITA! wrap it in something clean so it doesn't get infected.

Re: Anyone's dog ever have to wear a cone? Update! NEED HELP!!!
The soft cone the PP is talking about is the Comfy Cone. They FINALLY started selling it at Petco, after I needed it for my dog.
I got mine online and at first I got him the medium - that's the one on him in the picture. But when he was neutered, I needed a new one that was larger so he couldn't reach his stitches and got the large size.
It threads through the collar so it stays on and it fastens with velcro. So I would take it off for him to do his business and eat. He slept with it on, because it was soft.
If you start having an issue again, I highly recommend it. Good luck and I hope his nail heals soon!

to the OP - i wouldnt keep it on if it has pee all over it. call the vet, explain and see what they say. Can someone come over to watch the baby if you have to run to the vet?

You can call an emergency vet, they have always been very good to m e on the phone instructing me what to do/not do.
I would take the cone off and watch him. It's stressing him out too much!
