Consider yourself lucky then because not all dogs are easy to train. I have tried many differnt things/techniques. I think what sometimes people dont understand is there are some dogs that just dont get it or for some reason dont want to get trained. Anyway, just a vent because I am really getting sick of people assuming I havent tried to train him or "given him a chance". I have had the dog for almost 4 years.

Is it possible that the dog is just lonely, not stimulated enough with no one being home all day and that is what is affecting him/her? Esp a rescue dog who went through God knows what before being taken in. Just a thought.

I guess no matter how consistent you are, how can consistency go on all day if no one is there? I guess that's why people suggested crare training but it sounds like your day is way too long to crate the dog. So there goes that...that's why training sounds very hard if the dog is home alone most of the day. Could that be the issue?

I know when I was training my dogs, I chose to get them only when I wasn't working so I could consistantly take them out to teach them. I did not think crating them for longer than 4 hrs a day was fair or good to do. If I could not have been off with them, I don't know if they would have ever gotten trained either, kwim?

Anyone who has watched Cesar Milan can attest that all dogs can be trained. It's the approach you take and how much work you put into it that make all the difference.

We could hypothesize all day on why you have these challenges 4 years later, even after training. But the fact is, as a responsible dog owner who loves her animal, it's up to you to figure out what works and do it. Or to get that dog in a loving home where someone else will.

Obviously, whatever training you did try to give him, it didn't work. No shame in that, but the question remains as to what you're doing to do about it now. Will you put in the work to get professional help and resolve these issues once and for all? Or find someone else who will? Whatever you decide, please don't do nothing. I know it's an animal, but it deserves the time and training.

Re: I need to find a home for my shitzu

i crate trained my dog from day 1. he loves his crate, he goes in there if i mention the word crate (he knows he gets a "good" treat.) but.... i would put him there at 830, and take him out on my lunch break and then again when i get home... there is no way a dog can go all day long in a crate... def look into a dog walker... i am sure its sooo hard esp w/ kids, working full time etc etc..... god, training my dog was a full time job and he was a pup Chat Icon
dont feel bad about the crate.... he has no choice at this point. just get a nice sized one....

Re: I need to find a home for my shitzu

I highly recommend crate training - no matter how long you are out of the house. We crate trained Misty and she was alone in her crate for 10 hours a day and suffered no negative consequences from it. After a while, we started letting her have free roam of the house for a short period of time and then began extending the time gradually. Eventually, she was able to be left home with free roam of the house and we didn't have to worry about her going in the house.

The point is, if the dog is home alone anyway, crating him/her for that period of time isn't going to hurt the dog. I would definitely try crating. Also, maybe you could get some wee-wee pads and leave them out for the dog to use.

(Sorry this is so long!)

I know that worked for you and Misty, but there are situations where some dogs would suffer negative consequences from it. For ex, if the dog needs alot of exercise, needs alot of human interaction (esp since it was a rescue, could have negative associations with a "cage"). Also if they arent home alot, the dog may be suffering from loneliness, totally depends on the dog's personality. Then when they do come home, is the dog getting enough attention or will it feel alone again all evening/night until the next day when it's crated again all day? KWIM?

So we would need to know more about the dog to say if it would or would not suffer negative consequences. I know my dog would literally go into a deep depression if he was left alone all day, by himself, even worse trapped in a crate. Some dogs HATE the crate, my dogs definitely did and I used it from day one, when we would go out (but never long stretches).

Also, a negative consequence that can occur is a dog holding it's urine too long, but not wanting to defecate or urinate on itself. Like humans, dogs can get bladder/Urinary tract infections and bladder stones if they dont relieve themselves often enough. For ex, since we had the baby, my dogs don't go on their afternoon walk anymore. They do get a chance to go in my yard, but they don't always like to urinate there and only pee once if at all, and definitely do not empty their bladders. Well, that caught up with my female dog...turns out 2 weeks ago, she got a very very bad urinary tract infection. I stayed up with her all night one night b/c she would try to relieve herself every 15 minutes, it was heartbreaking. So I thought about what has changed, what could have caused this? And I highly suspect it's from not emptying her bladder often enough, like she used to do on her 3 walks a day (they pee multiple times on a walk, reallly empty their bladders).

The vet then told me that dogs should empty their bladder minimum 3 times a day. So basically I have to walk her in the afternoon to be assured she will empty her bladder enough to keep bacteria out of it. Just as humans have to do, flush out their urinary tracts to keep from getting infections. Ideally it might work if someone could walk her dog in the afternoon to have a bathroom break and let the dog stretch, etc. All the training books I have even say a dog should not be crated for more than 4 hrs or so without a bathroom break, playtime, water, etc. I am sure there are exceptions to this, but ideally, you want to keep the dog's urinary tract free of bacteria with emptying the bladder 3 times a day (my vet said a minimum of 3 , esp for small dogs).

So I just wanted to throw that out there, so the OP can make the best choice possible that is realistic and fair to the dog.Chat Icon I want nothing more than the OP to keep the dog but only if it's a realistic and fair choice to the dog.
