South Africa 2010 World Cup
Is anyone going?
DH and I were talking about going, but not sure yet. We need to get prices down. I've been to South Africa twice and I would love to go again.
We would probably do what DH really wants to do b/c he has never been. He really wants to do a safari, and I know Kruger is known for this, but I kind of wanted to stay on the Cape Town side of SA not the Jo'burg side for safety reason. Are there safari areas on the Cape Town side? We also are talking about going to Vic Falls (not sure which country we should base ourselves in since Zimbabwe isn't an option). Anyone know any safari places near Vic Falls? We are all over the place here, but we know we don't want to travel too much, maybe just base ourselves in two areas, Cape Town and Vic Falls.
Of course we would go to games.
TIA!

You must go! It is amazing! We have traveled to Africa many times. We did our safari at Royal Malewane. Some people say it is not worth going to victoria falls other say to go. We decided not to. I am not sure how safe the area is as well.

Re: South Africa 2010 World Cup
Where is Royal Malewane?
I have been dreaming of going to Vic Falls for ten years now. It is kind of one of my dreams. I love the Imperialist history of Africa and I want to see that bridge.
Also how hard is it to get World Cup tickets? I went on the FIFA website and saw that they have different times to buy tickets and DH and I can't buy the tickets until after we move which is in January (DHs new job is reimbursing our move when we arrive there). Will it be hard to get tickets at that time?
If anyone knows about World Cup tickets that would be a great help.
TIA!

Royal Malewane is in the Thorny Bush area of Kruger. We had to take a private charter there. I believe you could also fly directly to an airport and take a car as well. There aren't any safari camps driving distance from cape town.

Re: South Africa 2010 World Cup
I looked into it for my boss. The matches take place in 4 different locations. Two are close (J/berg and Pretoria) and the others are a far distance and one would be an internal flight. He would have tickets through a contact - one of his friends' kids is on the US team - so that wouldn't be a problem for him.
From JFK to J/berg there was one direct flight and it was $4,200 per person. The non-direct started at $2,500.
I would really think about the safety of travelling around South Africa during that time but there are some packages available that include flights, tickets and personal security.

Re: South Africa 2010 World Cup
we've been to the last 4 world cups (US, France, Japan, Germany) and were keen and planning to go.
and then I got pregnant.
my child will only be about 9 months old when the WC begins, far too young to go to Africa. so no, we are not going. it's disappointing, considering we were on such a good run but we may just go over to Spain or France...where there will still be more excitment than there will be here over the whole thing. I am fine bringing the babe to Europe.
twill be bittersweet.

We went to Victoria Falls and I loved it. It was one of the most magnificent places I have ever been. I can't give you advice on safaris because we went to Kruger and we went to Hwange which is in Zimbabwe and you don't want to go there now!

Did you get to buy the tickets for your boss? I am wondering how hard it is to actually get them.
I thought there were 8 stadiums? From what I understand there are at least 6 different cities, quite a ways away.
I would be travelling from Frankfurt and I found some flights at $1500 return.
I am concerned about the safety, but Cape Town will be a bit safer than Jo'burg.

How far in advance did you buy your tickets?
The thing is we won't be able to buy them until January at the latest, if we can swing this. DH may be made redundant and if he gets a nice leaving package (we've heard they are nice) we may be able to do this trip. Sadly, we are hoping he gets laid off because it would be more money than he would get if he were to work for the next three months. They don't know he has another job overseas.
He has a job lined up in Frankfurt and we are moving there in December and we want to wait to buy anything until we get settled in and a budget in order etc.
If he doesn't get laid off, we can still do it, but not everything we want. It would still have to wait until January.
I forgot about the atmosphere in Europe. I experienced it for the Euro 2000 and 2004. If I don't go I can still have that feel.
How early did you get your tickets? Do you think waiting until January is too late? Do the good matches sell out years ahead of time? DH and I want to go to the quarter final and semi final in Cape Town in teh beginning of July. I know this is probably asking too much.

No. As much money as he has, even he thought it was too much to spend. He went to Germany as a guest of a UK law firm - it's unlikely they would fly him to South Africa but he's holding out hope
You're right about the total number of stadiums. I was looking at the matches from the quarter finals on. If you go to the FIFA website they give the guidelines for getting match tickets.

there is a lottery for the tickets for mere mortals like us. for the last 4 WC, we entered the lottery and "won" the tickets. they come in different catergories and different packages. we usually do the "follow your team" (Argentina) though you can also get tickets from the US Soccer Federation (each country gets a certain number of tix to sell...we saw two USA games in Germany, and my dh saw four Arg games there...he only won 1 ticket for the "follow your team" I hung out in the cities watching the matches with the other "unlucky" souls without tix and had a BLAST)
I am pretty sure the lottery deadline has come and gone...we didn't bother entering after finding out I was knocked up. the second sales phase has begun and will close in November.
the tickets WILL NOT be cheap...but it would be a fabulous experience and we really lament not being able to go.
the WC generally is our "big trip" every four years. we take 3 weeks off and really have a VACATION. the cost IS pretty extravagant, even though we go low key...two star hotels, hostels, ramen noodles and lots of wurst mit brot
it is something very special if you are a fan of football though. I am very hopeful that the Euro countries will have their markets open and big screen tvs up as they do when they are hosting.
last year we went to Switz for the Euro, and the big screen was up in Piazza Duomo in Milan for the Italy matches. I am for the same atmosphere come June/july of next year.
Germany has a really good shot, so if you do end up staying closer to home, they could pull out those tv's of four years ago and have the party all over again.
ticket info
If you do go, please know that I will be insanely jealous. it's really really exciting...and going to Africa is one of my ultimate trip experiences...
