Repairing, stripping/refinishing old furniture

I have my grandmother's furniture in my bedroom. Over time, it has taken a bit of abuse and really needs to be fixed, stripped and refinished as it would be criminal to toss it. We may have to get new pulls/knobs. It is heavy wood - not pressed wood. They don't make stuff like this anymore

ANYWAY... does anyone have experience with this kind of thing and if so, did you find it worth it?

TIA

Re: Repairing, stripping/refinishing old furniture

if you really love it then its def worth it. we are planning on doing this with my grandmothers old dressers that we took. I love them and it means a lot to me to keep them.

We did this with one piece of furniture. My FIL worked FDNY in Bedsty and a NYC school was throwing out old school desks. He took one and stripped it (it had been painted white) When we moved into our house he asked us if we wanted it. we loved it and DH cleaned it up, sanded it, stained it and finished it.

this is what it looks like now (i am mad i didnt take a picture of it before)

I refinished an old table that I got from my Aunt and Uncle. Lots of old paint. They even painted over the leather-covered top... Chat Icon Chat Icon

Lots of paint stripper, replaced the leather top with a mirror, and just used a wood stain/clear coat, and it looks very nice now.

DW has an old cedar chest that I've been working on and off now for a few years. I need to replate some of the copper plates "rivets", and polish the copper bands, plus sand it, then refinish it. I will *eventually* get it done.

That is beautiful. These are the pieces that we will stain when the time comes. Odds are, if we can go darker, we will. There is also a majorly huge mirror with a wood frame that is about 4 feet high and runs the length of the dresser. Forgive the messy room:

Note the broken pull on the bottom drawer. Ive been trying to locate a match for it through antiques places and other sources. No luck. I might be better off just getting all new ones. Some of the drawers in the dresser are in need of repair.

There are places on LI that do this for you if you don't want to take on the project yourself. I think there is on place that is called Wood Doctor, it think.

My mom has redone some pieces and they out beautiful.

I have an old piece of my grandmothers that I want to redo, but I'm not sure if I'm going to restain it or sand it down and paint it white. I'm really into the white right now, but we will see. It will probably be a couple of years before I find the time to redo this piece.

GL! Beautiful peice you have.

Thanks. When we buy a home, hopefully before December, we will do it. Staining has to be cheaper than buying new - at least with the quality of the furniture we'd be dealing with.

Im all about hiring people. I am not handy enough and frankly, Im lazy.

I have to refinish my mother's dining room set.

I know there is a place called Furniture Doctor on sunrise highway. I've been meaning to call them for a price. I've heard good things about them.

Great desk! Do you happen to the color stain used on your floors? I love it!

Really??? I never would have guessed that! I'm having our floors done next week and I'm torn between English Chestnut, Special Walnut or Dark Walnut. Gotta go check out Red Chestnut now! Is it more red in person? It doesn't look super red in the pic. Is it one coat or two? Thanks so much for the info.

Me too! Chat Icon I have my father's childhood bedroom set that I would eventually like to refinish for when we have another baby.

There is a place I think it's on Sunrise Highway in Merrick/Bellmore. I drove by it a couple weeks ago. When the time comes I may go there for an estimate.

Thanks so much for the info and the additional pics! Your floor looks great. Now I have yet another color in the running! I'm going to ask our floor guy to put down a sample of each and then I'll make a game time decision!

Okay, hijack over.

Furniture Doctor on Sunrise, that was the place I was talking about. Don't know how expensive they are. You could really update but still keep the old feel of your furniture by going dark. Dark Mahogoney or Dark Cherry. Than you can buy new pulls maybe with crystals on them. It would give you that newer chic look but still have great wood furniture. GL! Post pics after you get them done.

I love the pieces you posted! I may be in the minority here but I so see these pieces refinished in white! They would look adorable in a girl's room with cute new hardware.

As far as restoration shops, I would like to know a reputable place on LI as well! Thanks!
