cleaning lady issue?
In an effort to save some $, DH and I decided to cut back our cleaning person from every other week to once a month. when I called her to tell her this, I nicely explained that we love the job she's doing, think she's great, has nothing to do with her, but we need to save. She said she understood, that many of her clients are doing it and no problem. But then she said she needed to raise the price! I was so surprised that I literally repeated it as a question, 'wait, you're raising the price on me?' And she said, yes, she has to think about a new price but yes. I said fine. I am completely surprised that given all the cutbacks she told me about, she wanted to raise me, not exactly the best way to do business IMO when there are so many cleaning people out there, but ok. She asked me when I'd want her to come and I said whenever is good for her. She said she needed to think, I said fine, think about it and give me a call back. That was over a week ago and I didn't hear back. VERY unlike her. Should I follow up with her or leave it alone? I'm really put off by this price raise thing.

I would imagine that she has to raise the price, since the house will be harder to clean since it's not getting done as often.
Just as, if you had a cleaning person come once a week - the price would be less than if they came every other week.

This is the reason.
I pay about 12% more for mine to come every other week, versus every week.
It's easy for them to schedule once a week or every other week (they just schedule another house on the opposite week, same day, same time) once a month for a non agency is more difficult.

That makes sense, i get my house cleaned once a week, if i cut back to once a month I would think it would take her alot longer to clean than if she was here every week.
If she raises the price by a lot it may be worth it to keep her every other week.

Agreed. I would most definitely expect her to raise the price. Cleaning services always discount based on the frequency of their cleaning.

Re: cleaning lady issue?
I honestly can't remember if you are the person I'm thinking of because I've recommended my cleaning lady to so many people, but do you use Emilia?
If so...than yes...that is what she does. It makes sense though. If she cleans your house every week, the price is less because the house is easier to clean. One week usually equals less mess.
If she comes once a month, the price is much more because it will take her much longer to clean a house that hasn't been deep cleaned in a month's time.
I've heard lots of cleaning people charging this way.

if it were me i would say bye bye. i understand what everyone is saying, but wouldn't you be cleaning your house on your own for the rest of the weeks she isnt there? if so it shouldnt be any harder for her to clean on the 1 week a month that she does come.

Yes when I had a cleaning lady her bi monthly rates were less than her monthly rate.

Re: cleaning lady issue?
If she only comes to clean once per month, the job will probably take longer and be much harder as there will be more to clean. I can totally understand her raising the price. I'm sure its not what you want to hear but if she's doing a great job and you trust her, why not just pay her.
You should call her and follow-up. It's possible that she'd rather not take the job if it's once a month as she could fill in that time slot with someone else who needs their home cleaned every week or every other.

Re: cleaning lady issue?
I agree with the others - I've been told by several cleaning people (who i use sporadically) that if you use on a weekly or bi weekly basis they are cheaper - if you do monthly it is more expensive b/c there is more to clean and less just maintenance. It stinks

Exactly. When i cut back from 2x/month to 1x/month my cleaning tried to raise the price b/c the apt (which is not big, 2 bedrooms and one bath) would be "dirtier." I told her that I would be cleaning it in the meantime and its not like she would have to do anything differently and that I wasnt going to pay more per visit. She wound up keeping the price the same. It also takes her the same time to clean the apt as before so I think its totally BS to charge more.

I think #1 from the cleaning person's perspective, they really don't know how a client is going to maintain their home in between.
And #2 I look at it more as a "buying in bulk" discount as opposed to having to clean harder. The more business you give her a month, the bigger the discount.

Re: cleaning lady issue?
So after this lady (who I happen to think does a wonderful job) made a point of telling me that people are cutting back on her, she decides that she 'can't' clean my house if it's only once a month because of my dog (who is 4 pounds - I clean around her wee wee pad myself daily so I can't imagine there is so much work for the cleaning person there). If I were losing business, I would take what I could get, I have to believe that she knows how many cleaning people there are out there. I'm really surprised by this.
