Rent (the movie)

I am curious what everyone else thought. I rented it last night. I never saw the Broadway show so I didnt know what to expect. Of course I was in tears by the end but otherwise I thought the rest of the movie was overall pretty bad. I was disappointed. What did everyone else think?

Re: Rent (the movie)

The play is one of my all time favorites. I have seen it multiple times. Though I was thrilled to see the majoroty of the original cast together and enjoyed the movie, the play is MUCH better musically IMO.

Re: Rent (the movie)

I just watched the movie last night and have seen the play a few times - it's one of my favorites. I actually really liked the movie- it was exactly like the play and I LOVE the music!!!

Ditto.

i was pretty impressed though with how they did the movie- i was unsure of how it was going to translate into that format. that said- the play was still much better. Chat Icon

I never saw the play and still do want to, but I agree with your Pauline. I couldnt get into it. I thought it was moving too fast and I stopped it and started it like 6 times just to finish it. I think they did well translating it to the big screen, but Im sure the Musical is still much better and wasnt fond of the adaptation even not having seen it on Boradway.

Re: Rent (the movie)

I have seen the play twice but haven't seen the movie yet. I want to see it, but it's just so sad I can't get myself to rent it yet.

Re: Rent (the movie)

It's 1000000000x better on Broadway. Some of the movie was just altogether bizarre. (I'm thinking the "Rent" song with everythong on fire...WHAT!?).

I thought the movie was pretty good though. I've never seen a Mark even half as good as Anthony Rapp

Re: Rent (the movie)

I'm a huge fan of the musical. I saw the movie twice in the theaters. The first time, I was disappointed by what they cut out and felt that for those people who weren't familiar with the story, a lot of plot development was left out. The second time, I stop over-analyzing and really enjoyed it, but I don't think I would have if I didn't already know the story forwards and backwards.

Re: Rent (the movie)

I am a fan of the OBC recording. The last time I saw the show on B'way I thought it was in desperate need of direction. It was obvious that the director had not been to see the show in a long time. The characters were parodies of what they were intended to be by Mr. Larson.

The movie was passionless to me. It wasn't bad. It wasn't good. It just lacked the what "Rent" originally was to me. I think that as amazing as the original cast is that they might have been better off casting people that hadn't already done these roles. I also felt like Columbus was not a good choice for director. It would have been better with a Rob Marshall or a Baz Lurhman (sp?) who actually understand the musical genre.
