Re: Planning a trip to Newport, RI
I went with a girl friend last summer. We stayed at an Travelodge outside of Newport - I can't remember but I think it was Middletown. We paid like $60 a night with free breakfast. It also had a pool that came in handy.
We bought like the 5 pack of mansion tours - we did those. Highly recommended! We took our time and had a great leisurely sightseeing trip. We also did the cliff walk, we split it up over 2 days. We went to the public beach for a while one day as well.
I can't remember where we ate. I know one place was the Quahag Clam House (I only remember because of Family Guy).
I'll try to think of more stuff. HTH! And have fun!

DH and I are actually heading up there tonight for a few days. We're staying at the Hyatt Regency on Goat Island. I'll post a review when we get back on Friday.

Re: Planning a trip to Newport, RI
When I was planning our trip, I did a search here on the Travel board and found a lot of great info.
We went last summer and stayed at the Hilltop Inn which we loved. Did some research on TripAdvisor and found out which rooms were the best. I'll update later with more details.

Re: Planning a trip to Newport, RI
Me and some girlfriends went to newport in may, and had a great time.
We stayed at the bestwestern which was actually really nice, and very very inexpensive and superclose to the main area with the shops and restaurants.
We had an amazing dinner at 22 bowens its right on the water and just a great experience.
We also ate at the mooring restaurant and that was pretty amazing too!
We walked around and went to all the shops, went a few bars/clubs that were kinda sad, but its newport lol not going to be happening nitelife compared to NY. but we made the best of it and had a great time!

My favorite restaurant is 22 Bowens in Newport. We also ate lunch at the Black Pearl, that was good too.

When are you going to be there?
There is a free beach boys concert this sunday at the NAval Base. There area all kinds of things going on in newport this summer--Music Festivals, Folk Festivals, etc.
Other than that, definited do the Cliff Walk, mansions tours, shopping on Thames Street.
I live in Rhode Island, so let me know if you need anything else.
Thanks!

Any hotel recommendations?
DH and I just came back from there last week. We stayed at the Hyatt Regency on Goat Island. The hotel was really nice and clean, but we thought that the rooms/bathroom were kinda small. We got a great deal on Hotwire for $160/night so I wasn't too upset. If I paid the full $300/night then I would have been disappointed. I would stay there again, but only if we got a good deal.
It was a 10-15 min walk over a short bridge to the downtown area where all the restaurants and shops were. It was really quiet and peaceful at night on Goat Island.

Any hotel recommendations?
We use our Hilton Honors points so we stay at the Hampton Inn in Middletown. It's about 10 minutes outside of Newport.
