How often to put chemicals in pool?
We got one of those Intex pools and it needs chemicals. My dh thinks every few days but I think that is too much. Thanks :)

Re: How often to put chemicals in pool?
I was told shock once per week, chemicals (alkeline and soda ash) each week, 5 tablets of cholrine in the filer per week, vacuum every two weeks or more often as needed. Filter run 6 hours at night and when people are in the pool.
Here is a link on 'how stuff works' to help you understand it.

Re: How often to put chemicals in pool?
As long as all the level are ok then you shouldn't really need to put chemicals in besides chlorine and shock.
What we learned this year with our pool is that if the pH and/or alkanlity is low the chlorine will not work. So you can shock it all you want the chlorine levels will still be low.
If your pH is low you add soda ash (you pre-mix the powder with pool water in a bucket then put that in the pool).
If your alkanlity is low also then you wait 4-6 hours after you put the soda ash in and add alkanlity up.
Make sure to check the levels after the 4-6 hours because some times if you add the soda ash it will help bring up the alkanlity and then you don't need to add anything else and you can add the shock.
If the pool stays up year round and has a filter I highly recommend getting a chlorinator. They are about $100 and you hook it up to your filter. It holds the chlorine tabs and what happens is that the water comes in through the skimmer boxes runs through the chlorinator then go to the filter and comes out into the pool. You fill the basket once a week with the tabs. The floating chlorine tabs holders and putting the chlorine tabs in the pool filter is not good for the lining of the pool. Another thing is that when you add your chemicals you always want to add them through the skimmer box.

Thanks :)
This is the type of pool that gets deflated at the end of the season.

Re: How often to put chemicals in pool?
Are you going to be testing yourself or bringing it to a pool supply store for testing?
I am going to take it to Leslie's for the first few weeks so they can tell me exactly what is needed then from there I am hoping I learn enough to test myself and do the chemicals myself.
This chart tells you based on your pool size how much to add of soda ash or alkeline depending on your readings

This is just an inflatable pool that has a small filter so it doesn't need to be tested. My dh thinks that once it gets cloudy, he needs to put more chemicals in and I just needed to know if that was true :)

Regardless if it is comes down at the end of the season or not, you still need to take care of it as it was a regular pool. You really need to check it before it gets cloudy. If you wait until that point you are just going to give yourself un-necessary stress and spend lots of money trying to get it clear. Another biggy is that it really needs to be vacuumed once a week to make sure no algae grows.
