I dont think that the rental companies have a time limit. as long as you keep paying, you can have the POD

well being the renter of a POD i will say for as long as it takes Chat Icon we are going to be staying at my ILs for a few months before we go to closing and we might be keeping the POD at their place.

I agree...as long as it takes. I was going to do a major construction project and would have needed a POD for 4-6 months. As long as it's in the driveway and not in the street or an encroaching area, I don't see the need to limit the time...not from a neighbor perspective at least. They are pretty expensive though.

As long as it is in their driveway and does not hinder a neighbor pulling out of the driveway, as long as they want.

In my situation, because the pod is in their driveway, they park the cars in the street directly behind my driveway. We live on a very narrow street, so it's almost impossible for us to back out. DH and I have to make a 10 point turn just to get out our driveway.

ETA: they have 2 trucks and 1 car

i know it's a hassle but if they have 2 trucks and 1 car would those all fit in the driveway anyway?

can you park in the street to avoid having to back out of the driveway?

So they are parking across the street from you.....which makes it difficult for you to back out.

How long have they had the POD in their driveway for?

Do you know them well enough to maybe ask or say something? Do they have any clue that you have to maneuver your way out?

A few times they were on the porch, saw that we were having difficulty backing out and moved the car. We have told them many times that they can park in front of our house, which will also make it easier for other neighbors to come down the block.

It is even worse when the daughter comes home for the weekend and has her car, she parks in front of their next door neighbors house (which is where the owner's husband parks)

I am nice to them and very respectful. I have tried to explain that it is difficult to back out and that I would hate for one day, one of us accidently bangs into the cars.

ETA: they park across the street, directly behnd our driveway. Sometimes, we cant even pull into OUR driveway because they parked on a slant! The p od had been their for over a year. They also have space for one car..but refuse to put it in the driveway

It's just very frustrating. When we have company, I always make sure no one is parked behind a neighbors driveway. On normal streets that wouldn't be an issue, but since our streets are narrow, it can prevent a homeowner from backing out, which is rude IMO

We had a similar issue in that our driveway is on a narrow street, and it would take me forever to back out of my driveway- especially when someone would park directly across from it. My neighbor solved the problem for his driveway by having the town put up a no stopping sign across the street from his driveway. When we moved into our house, different cars began parking directly across from our driveway in front of his no stopping sign. So, we did what he did, and put in a request to the town to have the no stopping sign extended from his driveway to across our driveway.

Eight months after putting our request in, the town did even better and extended the sign so that no one could park up to the corner of the street. It has made life a lot better!

There may be a time limit, check your town's ordinances.

I just called the town and without a permit it's 3 months. After 3 months they need a permit(which they don't) and will have 30 days to remove the pod. They asked me to file a complaint, but I refused for now because I don't want to cause them any stress by needing to find a place to put all their stuff and I also don't want to be "that" neighbor. I think I will have DH speak with them again and hopefully they will finally understand the inconvenience they are causing. IF nothing comes out of the talk, I will have my DH mention that according to the town, they are in violation.

You guys have been dealing with this for a year?? Ugh. I can DEF understand your frustrations......that is wayyyy to long IMO. Not so much the POD, but the Car situation. And it's true....if your street is narrow, it wouldnt take much for you to hit theirs by accident.

Especially since they have seen this...I am so surprised they haven't done much about it. I guess people are more conscious than others in "doing the right thing".

Good luck!! I understand not wanting to be the bad neighbor.......but it's also not fair that you have to go thru this every day with absolutely no consideration to you whatseover.

I sympathize with them if they are waiting for renovations to be complete and it is taking forever, but I can definitely see your frustration as well! I hope they move it soon!

I don't understand your question. Are you asking if I pull into my driveway? If so, YES, we park OUR cars in our driveway. The problem we have is backing out and pulling into our driveway because they are parked directly behind it (other side of the street) which is narrow.

Re: How long is TOO LONG for someone to have a storage unit in their driveway?

I think a year is way to long unless you are completely redoing the house from top to bottom. My DH's friends house was half gutted by fire and they had 2 storage units on their property for about 1 1/2 years so the house could be completely redone so that I can see. But it sounds like they are just storing and why cant they go to public storage and use their units. I would maybe talk to them and you might have to be that neighbor you don't want to be because it is a nuisance for alot of people. Especially if it is illegal.

If my neighbor had a storage unit because of a fire or complete house renovation, trust me, I would s*ck it up. The reason they have it is because they are running out of room in the house!! Apparently, they are pack rats! No renovations are going on in that house! Oh and another thing..their next door neighbor who we are very close with saw them pour a bucket of what looked like oil over their fence into the old ladies yard (who lives behind him).

i can't believe you have had to deal with this for a year - i thought you were talking about a couple of months!

i know you want to be a good neighbor but really, they don't seem to care.

i hope you can work things out with them, but if not, don't hesitate to call the town Chat Icon

I would call the town. That is way too long. I can't imagine they are allowed to keep it in their driveway for that long. I know in our town you need a permit to have the pod.

If there are no renovations going on then I would think that they are thinking of this as a permanet thing.

Have DH talk to them one more time and ask how long the pod will be there. Tell them that you saw someone from the town looking at it.

If they don't do anything then-I would make a complaint and I would not feel badly about it at all-it's too much and to think you could end up with this permanentlyChat Icon Chat Icon
