I know this is all said and done but....
I have to add to it... if you have a pet that is constantly peeing or pooping in your house and you took the pet to the vet and there is nothing medically wrong.. don't say you have run out of options and will put the healthy pet to sleep. There are other things you can try- there are plenty of books about behavior modification in pets(especially cats). You can also try giving the pet some extra attention. Maybe that it is.
But it will take time and needs to be done. Don't say I will do it and you don't . That won't work. Make a plan and stick with it because:
PETS(CATS) ARE NOT DISPOSABLE!!!!
And for those that disagree, remember we are all entitled to our OWN opinion!!

Re: I know this is all said and done but....
I had a male cat growing up that was getting kidney stones. We had to give him a $2000 surgery to keep him alive. After the surgery, he was never the same. He would pee all over my parents house and the smell was terrible. You can't get it out b/c it seeps down into the carpet padding. I tried EVERYTHING that was suggested to me, but there weren't that many options - and still, he would not stop.
One day - I came home and my dad had taken him to a shelter that puts the cats to sleep I hated my father for a long time for doing that but as I got older I understood, he was destroying the house. The smell never came out, no matter the product, until my parents had a house fire and the whole house was redone!
Just sharing my story. Its a difficult situation to be in and I feel bad for the people going through this.

Great post Reggie, so true.
Denise, my cat had the same surgery. After that he was fine. Sorry to hear about your result.

Re: I know this is all said and done but....
My kitties really did a number on my house for years. I replaced carpet twice. I still have to replace my bedroom carpet.
It never entered my mind to put them down. We just tried and tried until we found the answer.
I had two cats and 4 litter boxes. That did the trick.
Those two have since passed, but my two new kittens don't seem to have that problem.
I think I learned a lot about having cats and their needs. I don't think I did everything I could to prevent the damage but I soon figured out how to prevent further damage.

I totally agree with OP.
And it's not just peeing/pooping. My dog just recently had to have her ACL replaced, it was $$$$. I can't tell you how many guys DH works with said they just would've put the dog down, because it would have been cheaper.
Are f'in kidding me?

My dog had hip and knee surgery (double whammy) about a month ago and it was $$$$. We didn't have the money to pay upfront, but there was NO WAY in helllll we would not have done the surgery for her - she was in pain for God's sake! We had to charge it, and I figure that's what cc's are for - emergencies. We'll pay it off slowly.
My own UNCLE, who has two dogs himself, said that I was nuts for paying that much money and that he would have put it down and gotten a new one.
His GF said he was crazy and that if that happened to one of their two doggies that she would be paying to get it done. I was happy to see that their doggies would be ok regardless.
I just don't get it. Just because they're animals doesn't mean they don't have feelings and personalities etc.

Re: I know this is all said and done but....
Exactly! Don't get a pet if you don't expect there to be some kind of an accident, something destroyed in your home, etc. It is envitable that eventually something will get ruined. I'm not saying it's the norm and you should just let your animals run amuck peeing and pooping on everything and clawing your furniture to shreds. But with a pet has to come the expectation that at the end of the day they are ANIMALS and they are sharing your home... and eventually you will have to deal with a mess.
My cats are more important to me than my rug or my couch. If something occurs, I clean it up and try to correct the problem...

awww..
I hated having to fill 4 boxes for two cats but it worked. Hey whatever worked.
My friend also had a problem and it stemmed from an item they picked up at a garage sale. Apparently the scent of another animal was on it and it drove the kitty crazy. She got rid of the item and the kitty stopped the behavior.
There is always a reason. We just have to find it.

Re: I know this is all said and done but....
I never had this problem with my cat but, I just adopted a dog 3 months ago. He is 4 years old and keeps going in the house. I think part of it is the cat. he would pee on the cats stuff but, now it seems random. I don't want to crate him. But, I would never even think of giving him up because of it.
