Better to use an architect first?
We're getting quotes on dormering/extensions. Our first appt is tomorrow night. One company I called today said getting estimates from contractors is pointless that we should have plans from an architect first. Is this always the way to start? We have no clue how much $$ we're talking so how can we have an architect draw plans for something we're not sure we can go through (we would scale down or change if it's too $$).

Re: Better to use an architect first?
Contractors have been building houses for years. They know pretty much how much things will cost. The architect does the details, and stuff to make sure it's sturdy and meets code. An architect can say that a span can be X number of feet, if you use Y type beams, but most contractors factor in things like that anyway, and know from experience.
I would definitely suggest using an architect, but I think a decent contractor can get within a few percent of the final cost just by knowing what you want.
ETA: I would have something drawn up, just so the contractor knows what you're thinking of. Even if it's just you sketching on paper with rough numbers for dimensions.
