Obamas settle on puppy
The president is finally fulfilling an important campaign promise — to get his daughters a new puppy now that his campaign is over.
WASHINGTON (CNN)– The frenzy over the First Dog is finally over. The Obamas are welcoming a Portuguese water dog to the White House that Sasha and Malia have named "Bo," according to two Democratic sources familiar with the secretive process.
The sources confirmed an account in Sunday's Washington Post that Sen. Edward Kennedy, who has three Portuguese water dogs, played a critical role in lining up the pup.
The puppy is set to be officially unveiled to the world on Tuesday after the Obamas host their first White House Easter egg roll on Monday.

We had considered a Portugese Water Dog since DH is allergic. They are great dogs. The people who own them do not want them to get too popular so I hope that is true!

Re: Obamas settle on puppy
Thank god that is over. I'm happy the girls got a dog and think he is a adorable. But maybe now we can hear about other presidential news.
Did anyone else find this poor planning/media on their part ?
- First, they are definately adopting from a shelter
- children have allergies, but they still plan on adopting for a shelter/rescue.
- Then, they pick an extremely rare breed that you are never going to find in a shelter. But still say they plan on adopting from a shelter
- Now, someone conveniently buys them a puppy and they decided to make a donation to ASPCA instead.

Oh, very very interesting. Not good at all for those of us against puppy mills.

Actually...The real information is this:
They were looking for an allergy free dog. They checked into shelters and rescues but could not find an allergy free dog.... This puppy was actually from a breeder known to Senator Kennnedy and the puppy had been purchased and brought back to the breeder. He is 6 months old and the breeder was not reselling him, so Sen. Kennedy intervened as he knows this breeder well and has gotten his dogs from the same breeder.
This is not a case of someone stopping at a pet store and buying the Obama's a puppy...it is a case of someone seeing Obama's need and filling it with a puppy who needed a home....

I am sure they will become very popular now. Any time a breed is brought into the spotlight that happens. When the movie 101 and 102 dalmations I saw so many of them everywhere. My mother's dog was a rescued dalmation and she was born around that time. The poor dog was bounced from multiple families because people didn't realize as cute as they can be they are equally hyper and sometimes mean. Hopefully breeders will be careful on who they give their dogs to.

I was thinking the same thing - even thought the dalmation issue. Like dals, Portugese water dogs are not for everyone. My ILs have them. They are wonderful dogs, but they really aren't for everyone. They can be very high energy and require a lot of attention.

Re: Obamas settle on puppy
yeah but who knows if the breeder is responsible. and why was the dog returned? health issues? behavior issues? i'm just hoping they didn't go with a backyard breeder/puppy mill like joe biden did.

The dog was returned because the previous owners other dog was having issues...a backyard breeder would have just resold the dog...

That's like trying to answer the question, "Why do people choose dogs based on looks instead of temperament, needs or personality?" There are a lot of irresponsible people out there.
I don't think a BYB would take it back at all. One of the marks of a good breeder is them vehemently asking you to return the dog to them if you feel you must give it up. They don't want to see any of "their" dogs wind up in a shelter, abandoned or dead.
Also, to clear this up - I keep hearing people (elsewhere) say that they "broke a promise" by not rescuing. They never promised anything except that they were getting a dog that fit their family needs. At the time they got this dog, there were 13 in rescues and they were either mixes or unable to determine if they were purebred or not. With an allergy concern, I don't know what else they could have done.
I am also worried about the popularity causing a lot of unwanted dogs winding up in shelters. Like I was when Marley and Me came out. But what can you do? People will do what they want, especially when they are seen as "just dogs".
