Spinoff to starting to run
What is the correct way to breath? When do you inhale/exhale and is it through your nose or mouth?

Re: Spinoff to starting to run
I try to focus on breathing in, in, in, out, out, out, out, so it's in 3, out 4. This helps me with getting stitches.
ETA: in through nose, out through mouth.

Re: Spinoff to starting to run
I have never breathed through my nose while running - i just can't do it. I feel like I can't get enough air in through my nose.
As a result, I have bad gums...my dentist says this is something a lot of runners experience as a lot of people breathe through their mouths.

Re: Spinoff to starting to run
Little off the topic, but the advice I heard when I first started running from a girl who ran track at college was "when you run you should be able to talk to someone running with you, if you can't you are probably running too fast for your ability". I lived by that rule when I started running and it really, really helped me figure out my speed. I made sure to follow it when I ran the half marathon and I talked to people throughout the marathon.

I've heard this too, but I've heard it in regards to long runs. When running intervals, or for speed, etc... I inhale through my nose for 2-3 steps and exhale out of my mouth for 4-5 steps. I try to breathe into my belly too, not my chest (but this comes from my yoga practice). It helps you stay relaxed, which I read in the ChiRunning book is a good way to run - relaxed. I've mastered the slow run, LOL, but the interval training breath is harder to hold onto.

Re: Spinoff to starting to run
I have heard to breath through BOTH your nose and mouth. I have asthma and there is no way for me to get enough air through my nose- I'd pass out. So I breath in and out through both.
P.S. I don't have any gum issues like a PP mentioned.

Re: Spinoff to starting to run
I usually breath in and out of my mouth. But sometimes I will catch myself and correct it and do nose instead...but its hard!
