Re: can u girls help me
I would bring any info you have from your old dr. If you had any tests and/or blood work done recently then I would bring copies of the results... Let the dr. know if you're taking any meds or prenatal vitamins... I am sure they will ask you that but just in case. That's really all I can remember them asking me whenever I went for a consult appt.
Lots of GL!

Re: can u girls help me
i have been to her before but last time i went i wasnt ttc. she told me what to do when i did start; but now it has been 5 months, so when we didnt get a bfp yet, i sceduled a consult appt with her to see what to do next... i put together a notebook with calendars of every month; when af arrived, when i ovulated, and when we bd'ed and then when we tested and got bfn's.

Re: can u girls help me
How old are you, if you don't mind my asking? Some OB/GYNs want you to try a full year if you are under 35.
Also, you might want to have DH with you, as they may ask questions about his medical history too.

Re: can u girls help me
I would just make sure I had all of my medical history (if she does not already have it) and that notebook you have sounds like a good idea.
Just to warn you (like Jen said), many ob-gyns will not start any fertility testing or refer you to an RE until you have been trying for one year when you are under 35 years old.
My ob-gyn, on the other hand, was aggressive and she started doing the initial tests (CD3 bloodwork, sonogram, SA, etc.) after I had been tryng for about 7 months. Based on the results of my tests, I went to an RE.
I'm not trying to discourage you from going because I am firm believer in seeing a specialist sooner rather than later, but just wanted to give you a heads-up as to what you might encounter!

she has all my medical records already; i had them sent over from my old OBGYN who I left because he doesnt deliver anymore....
So, I have the notebook with all the info that I have been tracking, and if she says she doesnt want to start testing yet then Im going to make an appt on my own with an RE I think and then maybe buy that Fertell or whatever its called that tests the CD3 for woman and the sperm motility for men. Just for a peace of mind for the meantime. I feel like Im just wasting time and energy at this point when something could be wrong and I could be getting treatment for it; KWIM?

I would be prepared to be told to be patient. MOst OBs will tell anyone under 35 to try for one year.

I agree with this. My OB would do no testing and only referred me to the RE after we were trying for about 10 cycles (I am under 35). At that point, he had a specific medical concern that he thought might make it more difficult for me to get pg.
It is possible your doctor may just give you some advice re: ttc and tell you to return in several months if you aren't pg yet.

ugh that is a long time! and really though; how many people really get pregnant on their own after 6 months! i feel like ok, ill wait until it is a year, try on my own, then go to an re and they tell me i have something wrong and i need to get treatment. but why do i have to wait a year to be told that when if there is something wrong now after 5 months of trying, i could get on the bandwagon now and start working at it. kwim? seriously, its just a waste of time. i am not getting any younger and this is only my first. i still want to have more kids, and if i wait a year, then it takes however long to conceive the first, then i have to conceive another time or two afte rthat, ill be 50 by the time im done, if i m even successful.... its so frustrating. why cant they do all the testing in the beginning so u know before you even start trying whether you will need help or not.

Re: can u girls help me
Well, we got pregnant on our own on our 13th cycle trying, so it does happen. My doctor explained that it can take a completely healthy couple up to one year to conceive. I know how frustrating it is.

Many ob's will tell you, you have to try on your own for one full year before they do any treatment or testing. My ob wouldn't let me see an ob unless we were trying for a year.
Even if you call an RE they might not see you for an appt unless you have been trying for a a certain amount of time or have a history of some sort that they think you need to be seen. They won't just see you unless you have a health backround your dealing with. 5 months isn't that long of TTC. Hang in there!!

I feel your frustration - I really do! I think all of us have been there are some point.
But by definition, to be considered as having inferility, you have to have had one year of perfectly timed intercouse without getting pregnant.
I know that 5 months can seem like an eternity, but it can take a perfectly healthy couple up to a year to conceive. So just because it doesn't happen in the first few months doesn't mean anything is wrong - KWIM?
So until you've tried for a year... unless there is anythign else in your medical background that would have the potential to affect your fertility, then it seems a bit early for going to an RE.
If your ob/gyn wants to run CD 3 and CD 21 bloodwork, give you an u/s to check for cysts, and get you an HSG and DH an SA... then go for it! But as PPs said, be prepared to be told to wait - especially if your insurance has specifications about when this kind of testing can be done.
My ob/gyn couldn't do any testing until we hit the 12 month mark. We had the SA done by our PCP at 9 months.

ITA and that's right some insurance companys won't cover RE visits or some tests unless you have been trying for a certain time too. Atleast this is what I was told. You prob could have a SA and an HSG done to rule out anything and IF they find something then you can have further testing.

She will tell you to wait a year of TTC before getting worried. I used to see her and that's what she told me. I didn't take her advice and started seeing a RE after 6 months. Trust your gut and don't worry about what she says.

Re: can u girls help me
I was seeing my OB/GYN for 6 months and was not successful on my own.. I knew something wasn't right... My ob/gyn had run a series of tests on me and in addition to all kinds of tests sent me for an MRI... After 6 months my ob/gyn suggested that I start seeing an RE. He just didn't have any answers for me...I was "inconclusive". He said that since I was young (at that time 29) I could wait a year but he didn't recommend that. I am glad that I was persistent and that I listened... I also don't need referrals to see specialists so I was able to call an RE and make an appt. A year later (now 30) I am getting ready to start my first IVF cycle... My point is - like others have said - trust your gut! Go for the appt., see what advice/info the dr. has for you, what other tests you may need to go thru and then proceed the way you feel necessary. GL!!

I do have a history of endometriosis and cysys on my ovaries since I was 16 though. I have had a laparoscopy, been on LUpron and the pill for it for 15 years. So, thats mainly why I am worrying. Plus my husband is 35.

Re: can u girls help me
I agree that 5 months isn't long enough for most OB-GYN's to send you to an RE, but if you really feel that you want to see one, then you should. Worse case scenerio they say they'll see you in a few months...best case they start some testing and you get some answers. I regret being a "good girl" and waiting a year to see an RE...wasted time IMO. GL

Have you ever tried charting? You can use fertiltyfriend.com Do you think that you might have IF issues for a specific reason? If not, you could be setting yourself up for a lot of tests and stress for no reason just yet.

charting my temps? No I havent done this yet. Just been using OPK's for 6 months... I have a history of endometriosis and ovarian cysts like i said, and i was on pill for 15 years , was on lupron, had laparoscopy, etc.... so i dont know if that has to do with the delay, but id just rather know now if theres problems, than wait another 6 months and have no success and then start testing, really; why wait when you can find out now.

I'll be the person here who says no one needs to give you permission to see an RE(as long as your insurance covers it.) Find one and make an appt!

Re: can u girls help me
If you are concerned and have a history of an issue - go straight to an RE. There is no reason why you should have to wait a year if you are pretty sure you have a problem. If this OB that you are going to see (Dr. Hanuer) tells you to wait a year, then find an RE on your own. Endometriosis IS an issue and you should be getting special treatment for it. Good luck!
