What is up with all the polygamy shows?
I didn't watch Big Love oh HBO because we dont' get it -- but I heard about it on the radio today.
Now there is some special on A&E about polygamous relationships and this one woman justified it like this:
What if you had a sister who didn't have anyone but wanted to have a husband and children -- would you be selfish and deny her of that right?
Okay okay okay -- I don't know about you, but it would be pretty sick if I shared my husband with my SISTER!!
Bleh!!!

It made me sad too when they started going into all of the abuse rates and stuff. That's one aspect of polygamy that I never even considered. I always thought it was strange but I wasn't aware that the abuse rates are considerably higher in polygamous families. That one woman's story was really sad.

we watched it and thought it was so funny.
DH grew up in Idaho and he said all the mormons were CRAZY!!!!!
He couldnt join the boyscouts because it was run by mormuns, so he had to join the Indian Eagle Scouts.
I dont get theri lifestyle, but it is illegal to practice polygamy, but they still do over there.

I was floored when she said that. I could not believe how brainwashed these women seemed...and how the men got to hide from the law under the guise of religion.  It all seemed like a crock of sh!t.

I watched that show last night and I was just flabergasted by all the stories. These men are just sick, I hate when people disect the bible & twist the words a round to make it seem like what they are doing is right. I felt horrible for all these women.

I was watching a bit of the A & E show. When the woman said the part of "It only bothers me when I'm lying in bed & I can hear my husbans making love to his other wives" GROSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The thing that really bothers me about some of these groups, is that a lot of the communities support and encourage child molestation. A lot of times an older man takes many wives, some of those in their teen years. That's disgusting!

but then arent these women to blame as well, for actually staying and being in a relationship knowing he is married to 2 other women??

I don't get HBO either, so I am not watching the new show, but I have to admit, I am strangely fascinated by the polygamy shows. I don't know why, I think maybe it is because their lifestyle is so opposite of my reality that I am so curious as to why they live the way they do and why they make the choices they make.
The shows I like the best actually show the girls and women who are able to leave the polygamist relationships and experience life on their own.

Yes & No IMO. If I live in this type of community & have been brainwashed from childhood believing that all this is ok & God's law why would I question it? I would think this is how it's meant to be and follow the rules.

I think that what was very telling in that show was that a state official in Utah said that it's easier to go after the mafia than it is to go after these polygamist husbands.
The levels of abuse and poverty are so unknown to us in mainstream society that while it seems weird that quite a few of these shows are popping up, I do hope that it's used to help these women and children.

I agree. The women and children are the ones who suffer the amost since they are the ones being abused.
