I think I am going through a tough spot . . .

I am so happy and excited about becoming a mom, so I don't want to be misunderstood. I am just having a tough time with pregnancy right now. I just entered the 2nd trimester and have just not felt so hot the entire first trimester.

I am very lucky, in many ways, and I know it could have been so much worse, but I still can't shake the all day nausea and the terrible taste in my mouth.

I have gained quite a bit of weight during the first trimester because of wanting to eat away the nausea and having a lot of aversions to the healthy foods that I had become so accustomed to eating.

Prior to becoming pregnant, I had lost 35 pounds on weight watchers and had maintained it for nearly 2 years. I have had weight problems my entire life, and I had finally reached a point where I felt comfortable with myself and my relationship with food. I felt so ready to become pregnant and to make sure I kept my weight gain healthy.

I did not expect feeling so physically ill and to eat as poorly as I have been. I don't want to continue this pattern, because I am a small girl (4'11 1/2) and really should not gain more than 30-35 pounds. The problem is that the nausea is not ending, that my aversions are strong and I really don't know how to stall the poor eating habits and the rapid weight gain while I feel this way, but I know I cannot continue on this way.

I am feeling very down about myself and just want to feel good again. I want to feel like I am healthy and happy with the way I feel and look.

I know that I can't keep waiting for the nausea to go away and for the aversions to go away, and for the awful taste in my mouth to go away, because that might not happen.

If I continue on this path, not only am I going to experience a very unhealthy weight gain and risk suffering consequences that come along with it, I am going to feel horrible about myself, and I really want to enjoy my pregnancy.

Sorry so long- I just don't really know what to do and am not sure if there even is a solution at this point, but I just needed to get it out.

TIA for reading

All you can do it try the best you can....maybe just try to eat smaller amounts when you do eat.
I know how hard it can be...but you can only do the best you can right now and once the baby is born get right back on track.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

my 100% honest opinion is that you print out this post and bring it to your doctor. They will help you through this....in the best possible way.

Maybe there is something in your diet that is causing the taste....maybe there is something they can help you nutrition wise to take away the naseau...(or even medication might help).

it will be HARD to talk about this to your doctor...believe me. I'm going to broach the weight topic with my doctor on Tuesday...i have promised myself. If you are nervous - hand it (the print out) to the nurse when you get there and make sure the doc reads it before entering the room....this way you cannot chicken out and NOT talk about it (not saying you will - but this plan of action helped a friend of mine FINALLY talk to her doc about a severe anxiety issue).

i am so sorry that you have not felt wonderful....but let's get on the road to getting you better, both physically and mentally....it's SO important!!

I'm hoping the 2nd trimester brings you the relief you need from the nausea. I know - for many, many women it does. They don't call it the honeymoon trimester for no reason.

I know the fear of never losing the weight or getting back to the way you were. I think every pregnant woman gets that - no matter how confident or how little weight they gain. BUT you've done it already. That nausea will end - if not soon, in the next 6-7 months! You know that you will go back & be able to manage your weight, eat healthy & exercise. You know the plan works. You are proof it works.

As for eating habits, I think what helps is the water. Even if you have to try to flavor it. Keep sucking candy in your mouth so you're not tempted to eat everything you see. Obviously dieting while pregnant it out, but they have a plan for new moms. They also have one for nursing moms - and if you nurse, the weight drops right off. Just don't continue to eat like you're going to the chair once you stop bfing.

Also complaining about being pregnant, doesn't mean that you are thrilled to be pregnant. It's not an easy time.

Chat Icon it's ok to feel that way! it doesn't mean that you are not excited to be a mom or happy to be having a child. honestly, i could have written just what you wrote! i actually feel relieved that i am not the only one to feel the same way. i too had terrible terrible nausea but would also eat to wear it away, only to feel sick again 10 minutes later! i could only eat stuff like bagels, crackers, and lots of other higher calorie stuff-so i feel enormous now! i am almost 15 weeks and i totally know i have gained more weight this time Chat Icon it totally s*cks. i feel horrible about myself. i used to be in great shape too so it makes it worse. anyway, what i do know is that with my first DD i gained 50 lbs and lost most of it in the months afterwards. so it is possible to get back to normal. just remember that this state is only temporary to try to enjoy the good stuff about it! i know i need to try and like it more myself! the end reward is totally worth it!Chat Icon

I felt the SAME way.. and still do.. it gets harder and harder with every week, when I see the scale rising so quickly.. I am afraid of gaining too much, being unhealthy, and causing problems in my pregnancy.. its really tough!!! I have battled with weight for so long and right before the wedding had gotten to an almost happy weight.. I imagined I would keep working out, eating well.. but after the first 5 weeks, that went bye bye.. and i was eating pasta, peanut butter and jelly, and anything with cheese.. and that was it...

I am entering my 3rd trimester, and I talked to my dr about it.. to be completely open.. i am 28 weeks, and up 26 lbs... and i am not happy.. but when I spoke to my doctor, he told me flat out, now is not a good time to be on a diet.. he did tell me to eat healthy (easier said than done) and to walk.. he said walking will do wonders.. and to be completely honest.. it has.. only gained a pound in the last 2 weeks.. He did offer to write me a letter to see a nutritionist if I wanted to, but since insurance wont cover it, I decided to wait..

It is hard, I wont lie... and I am sure it will be even harder afterwards when I have to struggle to get it all off again.. and the end result is MORE than worth it... but I just wish I had more control over myself to be completely honest.. I try as hard as i can, and thats all we can do..

guess I just wanted to share my experiences with you guys.. hope it helps to know there are a lot of us that feel this way!!!

Re: I think I am going through a tough spot . . .

I feel better knowing I am not alone. I just get so discouraged when I see so many people gain nothing or next to nothing during the first trimester. I do have faith that I have done it before and I can do it again, but I just don't want to continue spiraling out of control. I have sciatic issues to begin with from throwing my lower back out at 22, and I am already feeling it getting worse at 14 weeks (it is always worse when I put weight on.)

I just feel like I don't get much support from others in this area because I am so "small" or because I was "too thin" to begin with.

I don't think the dr.'s office even realizes the weight gain yet because the first time I got on the scale I was wearing much heavier clothes than I would ever normally weigh myself in and then the second time my clothes were WAY lighter and I only showed a 2 pound gain, so I was told I was doing great- Chat Icon If only they knew.

I have 2 weeks before I go for my next monthly appt. I hope I can get myself under control and balanced out a bit by then.

Either way, I am going to try and discuss this with my dr.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon the only thing i can really think of is ask your doctor if he has a food plan you can eat on(maybe like a diabetes diet?) .... I too had a tough weight problem since high school, I joined weight watchers lost the weight in 2007/8 then got pregnant.. it is SOOOOOOOOOOOO frustrating reading the endless posts on here of people saying they didnt gain/lost weight in their first trimester... I have been eating Burgers, icecream, cookies- things that I had severly cut back on in weight watchers- the only thing i do is make sure to take my multi vitamin, milk/orange juice and when possible fruits/veggies... I have gained alotChat Icon in the first/second trimester....but there are some girls posts on here who said they did gain it in the first two, then barely gained in the last third soooo there is hopeChat Icon

Re: I think I am going through a tough spot . . .

Bri - I gained 56 pounds Chat Icon during my pregnancy and you know how small I was to start! I really didn't overeat either. I ate what I normally ate, maybe 10% more. And I still gained that much. I don't think it is something you can control when your pregnant, like in my case I feel like my metabolism just completely slowed down and my body began to store, store, store.

But if it makes you feel any better, by the time I left the hospital (3 days post partum) I had lost 22lbs! Just by giving birth & losing blood!

Re: I think I am going through a tough spot . . .

OmG. I am so glad you posted this. I could have written it myself today. I have been so hard on myself. I am almost 22 weeks and up 16 pounds. I am so glad that some other people are feeling the same way. I too am only five foot tall. Well, five foot one inch.. but, you get the idea.
I think the thing to realize it that if you gained hardly any weight, you would post about it too. The other side to that is that those who are upset about thier weight gain are not going to post it becuase they feel bad. So, I think we all have to remember that every body is different and every body responds differently. For every, I only gained twenty pounds post there are the I gained fifty pounds people that don't post about it.

I was eating really bad in the first trimester and eventually it got better. It kind of slowly goes away. But in the past few weeks that bad eating snuck back up and I know I need to get it under control.
I don't know if that helped.. but, it was a little theraputic to me to get it all out.!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: I think I am going through a tough spot . . .

I hated my monthly visits to the doctor because of the gain. My first trimester was horrible. I had morning sickness from the moment I POAS and it lasted everyday all day for 4 months. The doctor gave me a prescription for the morning sickness. The smell of coffee even made me want to hurl and in an office that loves coffee it was not an easy task hiding my pregnancy.

Then came my second trimester and I went from not eating to eating everything. I literally was able to eat more then my husband.

My total gain was about 40lbs. When DS was born I think I lost about 15 lbs. 5 months PP and I've lost about 20 lbs. I will admit it's not easy and I look at my pre pregnancy jeans and actually cry because I want to fit into them again.

I've learned you cant beat yourself up. I am trying very hard to loose the weight and their are times I just hate to look in the mirror but I know it'll come off. It may be slow but it will come off.

It'll be ok. Talk to your doctor about the nausea. They may be able to give you something for it. Always talk to your doctor about any concerns you may have because they will be able to give you the best advice and are their for you and your baby

As someone who is also a WW lifetimer having lost 27 pounds, I know how you feel. I have also been very lucky during my pregnancy as far as no m/s. I have literally gained almost a pound per week and am 21 weeks. I DO eat healthy and drink my water but still I GAIN! I finally had to let it go - there are other plans for me at this time and I know that having been a WW lifetimer that I can do it again - once my little girl is here. Embrace your belly, it's a beautiful thing. We can worry about how we'll lose it (and we know we WILL) once our angels have entered the Earth. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
