My Doc recommended...................
That I start taking extra folic acid on top of my pre natals.
Is it necessary to take more than what is in the pre natals? One of my friends told me that your body doesn't absorb more than what is in the prenatals so it would be like taking the extra folic acid for nothing.
Tell me what you think please

My prenatals have 156% of daily allowance so I would think that this is ok. My ob said that otc are ok for now. If your dr says its better I would just go for it. So many people have different views.

Is there anything in your medical history that might make that necessary?
Or maybe your doctor thinks your specific prenatal doesn't have enough?
I'm sure the doctor knows a lot more than we do!

I take an extra mg of folic acid in addition to my prenatal. I have a family history of spinal cord/neural tube defects.

Re: My Doc recommended...................
I take almost 6mg of folic acid a day. I have mthfr and it interferes with the absorption of folic acid so I have to take a lot to absorb what a normal person would. Also Metformin (pcos & diabetic drug) can interfere as well. Taking more can't hurt. You can't OD on folic acid you just pee out the extra. If the doctor recommended I would take it. Better be safe then sorry. It will help prevent neuro tube defects in the developing fetus.
