when to go off BCP
I'm new to this board...we are planning to start TTC in May! My dr. said to go off the pill 3 months before. Is this what many of you did? I feel like that sounds like a long time?

Re: when to go off BCP
the reason they want you to go off 3 mos is because using BCP has thinned your uterine lining -- and once you are off of it for 3 mos---it should be normal again. you CAN get pregnant right off of BCP but docs are worried that you might wind up having a miscarriage since your uterine lining is not as thick as it should be.
ETA: also -- a lot of docs say it takes 3 mos for your body to lose all the hormones from the BCP and for your own body to start producing the hormones again needed to maintain a pregnancy
3 mos is the magic number! good luck!

Re: when to go off BCP
there are a lot of reasons doctors give that 3 month number.... MrsPJB gave you a few of them...
there is also the chance that you will not ovulate right after coming off the pill....it can take that long for your body to regulate.
i always talk about my friend Stacy who was on the pill for 10 years and came off it to TTC. She did not ovulate for 10 months, but that 11th month, she ovulated (finally) and got her BFP.
For me - i went off the pill in February (took my last pill beginning of march, like march 2nd)....and ovulated in April. Everyone is different...
There are some girls that have gotten pregnant BLAMMO, month 1 after coming off...and there are girls like my friend Stacy...there is no way to know which way you and your body will go.
Best of luck to you!

Re: when to go off BCP
my dr said it would be okay to try right away, but it might take a while to regulate. I went off the pill in November, and went 65 days without my period, my dr then put me on medication to jump start my period. I wish i would have gone off the pill sooner!

Re: when to go off BCP
I wish I had gone off BCP sooner. I always had a very regular period so I figured I would go back to that quickly. Well, my cycles have been very screwy for the first three months. They slowly started to go back to normal these past two cycles with the help of Vitex, but I am impatient now. I wish I had gone off alittle before I was ready to TTC so when I was ready, my cycles were regulated. I feel this whole TTC journey would be less frustrating.

Re: when to go off BCP
Really? Wow, that is good to know. We were just going to go off of it and then wait a month and start trying, but I can see how it would be an issue if my cycle doesn't stay normal. Thanks!

Not all doctors believe that this is so and there are plenty of people who with the of of their doc go off BCP and get pregnant succesfully right away. That being said - I always say that the sooner you go off the better - so you can learn about your body/your cycles/your patterns or lack of them.
Best of luck when you are ready!

Re: when to go off BCP
That's what I did-typically, you need about 3 cycles to regulate. That is what my doc said to me.

3 is not a solid rule, it is just a recommendation. You can get successfully pregnant your first cycle off. 3 is just a baseline. It really depends on the individual and their body.
