i've had both. snugride for my frist almost 6 years ago. was a good seat, but if your kid runs bit be prepared to switch over very early. my son was out of it at 6 months. and i missed it ALOT! so much easier to carry the entire car seat into the house when they are sleeping.
got the safeseat for my DD who is 14 months now. she's over 22lbs, and yes its heavy, but she doesn't transfer if she's sleeping, so i can pick the entire thing up and take her in the house to nap in the seat. much easier.
so i got 6 months use on the snugride and 14 months and going on the safe seat.... the extra weight is worth the longer time i have to just carry her in the car seat into the house to sleep.
as for going anyplace when she is awake, i take her out of the car seat and put her in the stroller. so i don't use the seat as much as when she was little.
Amy I have no idea how you do it since Kaitlyn is about the same weight now - I was thankful when she was out of the infant seat b.c it was getting WAY too heavy to carry - I couldn't imagine carrying her in it until 17 or 18 months (since that is about the length and weight of the seat.

We went with the Safe Seat. Baby Bargain book gives both the Snugride and SafeSeat good reviews. The Snugride gets a better review, but not by much. I'm a little concerned about the weight, but it seems all the car seats on the market are just as heavy. It was a tuff choice between the two. Especially since I'm Petite and the snugride would be better on my back.
Reason I went with the SafeSeat: 1. Can hold a baby up to 30lbs. 2. Easy to install 3. Has extra side impact protection, which the snugride lacks. I originally wanted the Peg Perego car seat to go with my stroller. This car seat is even heavier then the SafeSeat and of course it is really pricey.
The snugride 32 does have the extra side impact - the old snugrides do not.
I didn't even know there was a new snugride car seat. Good to know!! I was just going off my baby bargain book.

Re: Graco Snugride vs SafeSeat
I had no idea myself until I was in BBB the other day and looking b.c I want to replace my old snugride (it took a beating in the 11 months I used it for DD) and I saw them (I think there are only 2 to chose from). I went to Graco's website and they were listed there - they call them the snugride 32.
