My MIL is on a roll lol

Ok. I have to admit, I have limited my contact with my MIL during this pregnancy as she has a habit of forcing her opinions down your throat. She is also very old school and extremely paranoid and cautious which drives me crazy. Alright just providing some background.

I found out from my cousin's wife that she cornered her at my shower and gave her this whole lecture about childbirth. She told her to not let the doctor talk her into a C- Section and to try her best to have a natural birth, avoiding drugs at all costs. When I found this out I was so upset and embarassed. My MIL hardly knows her and it was extremely bad form for her to say those things.

Ok last night, she told me that I had to HAND WASH all the baby's clothes. I told her I was not doing that. She also said that we should not use the wipes and pampers we have right away, but find out what brand the hospital uses and use that for a few months.

I have never heard this before.

I am trying to ignore her, but when the baby comes she is really challenging me.

Any chance your DH could have a little chat with her? Would that be pointless?

Just yes her to death and do whatever the hell you want to do .......Like she's going to know what brand of diapers you used or HOW the baby's clothes got clean??
If she wants them hand washed, tell her to come over and do it herself !!Chat Icon

Ditto, I totally agree with this post! Unless of course you see her a lot, then you might have to have Dh have a little chat or say something gently yourself.

I agree with this as well. It sounds like you have your work cut out for you with your MIL. You do what you feel is right, don't let anyone influence your decision, this is between you and your DH how to go about labor/deluvery and raising your child. Good luck with your MIL!

Hand washing a baby's clothes is a lot less sanitary than machine washing - it's similar to washing bottles by hand or in the dishwasher!

Re: My MIL is on a roll lol

I pretty much smile, nod and ignore her.

DH pretty much stays neutral. He knows I am going to do what I want anyway.

It just boggles me and I am speaking generally right now, how people feel it is ok to force their opinions on you.

To me that is just alot of nerve.

I feel for you. It's a tough situation those MILs! You have to either grin and bare it or lay down the law in the beginning. I've had my outs with MIL a few times informing her basically that I have a mother, two sisters, sil, cousins and friends way ahead of her on my list of women to seek advice from. Things tend not to get too bad anymore. And the best is they've been in Florida since December and will not be back until April! I'm due in July! Maybe you can give your MIL some brochures on snowbirding!!! Chat Icon

Good luck and stay strong! This is your and DH's baby to raise!

Re: My MIL is on a roll lol

OH YES i can soo relate. My MIL tries to do this with me almost on a daily basis. Saying that she raised 2 boys and she knows what is best because she has been there. Well i have recently told her i appreciate her advice but it i my child my house my way, and DH agrees but he wont tell her that. Times have changed and i really want to do this our way. She doesnt understand that. She is still pressing the issue that she should be here when we come home to help us get settled. UH NOOOO if anyone it will be my mom whom im more comfortable with, but thats a whole different issue. Stay strong Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: My MIL is on a roll lol

Thanks ladies.

She really thinks she is THE authority on raising kids.

She thinks she knows everything which kind of annoys me.

Like at my shower, people were making guesses on the gender. She goes oh she is absolutely having a boy because she is carrying the way you are supposed to . I carried all of my boys high and in front. She goes girls are more pointy. I am saying to myself, I have heard that boys are more pointy, but whatever, to me it is all crap anyway.

I will stay strong. Thanks for letting me get it out though.Chat Icon

I would just let it go in one ear and out the other.

But the wipe thing I was told this too by a midwife at my lamaze class. I think the wipes can be a bit harsh for their delicate skin. I just used bounty towels in warm soapy water, but its all a personal decision.

ahhh I have a similair mother in law. Limited contact is the best. She tells me that I am endangering my child by using a midwife in a hospital. Chat Icon Chat Icon I have to think that it will only get worse once the baby is here. So good luck and just be like a duck and let everything roll off your back like water!

I have to admit I have heard the wipe thing though. My mom is an L&D nurse and she told me only warm water and paper towels for the start. I think there was a thread on that a few weeks ago. I think most of the hospitals don't give out wipes for that reason. But no PAMPERS??? What are you supposed to use?

LOL, she said find out what brand of pampers the hospital uses and use that brand. I will now have to do more research on the wipes thing. I had never heard of that.

Re: My MIL is on a roll lol

I found that thread I was talking about and I bookmarked it for myself. I also had no idea about this paper towel thing until last week when I read it and then questioned my Mom about it. She looked at me like I was nuts and was like, "of course, didn't you know that?"Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
