Antibiotics

DH has been taking antibiotics for the past four days for an ear and sinus infection. Last night he took them (without food) and about a 1/2 an hour in he started shaking uncontrollably. This happened to him last time he had an ear infection after taking antibiotics. You would think that if he were allergic to antibiotics he would have this reaction the first time he takes them, but each time it happens a few days in. Could it be the fact that he didn't eat anything? Should we have called his doctor? Right now he just stopped taking them all together.

Re: Antibiotics

Call the doc for sure since he will need a replacement antibiotic to finish knocking out the infection.

Maybe it takes a few days for him to get the reaction because the antibiotics need time to build up in his system before they cause the allergic reaction to kick in? Just a guess though.

Def ask the dr to prescribe something else though.

Re: Antibiotics

That is an allergic reaction. I hope the doc can prescribe something else.

He should probably go in to see the doc.

Re: Antibiotics

My son is allergic to antibiotics. He didn't break out in hives until about the 4th or 5th day, so I would say yes -- it could take a little time to show a reaction.

I called the Dr. and when I told the receptionist how DH had this reaction after 4 days she said: "Well, then it can't be the antibiotic if he's been on it for that long." I told her I disagreed and she then had me talk to a nurse. The nurse agreed that this is a problem and is now having a doctor call me.

The receptionist told you this? UGH. I am allergic to pennicillin. I got hives after 3 days on it. The receptionist should shut up. Glad the doc is going to call you.

Doctor wants DH to stop taking the drug and to call him in the morning to follow-up.
