Maybe someone here can help me and JT figure this out.

Chat Icon OK, so last night, we locked our cats in the basement because they had been annoying us at night. 5am this morning, JT wakes me up and tells me he hears footsteps in the house. He instantly goes to get out of bed and check the house. Before he could get to the door to open it, it opens itself and one of the cats runs in. So, he checks the house, makes sure everything's ok and goes to put the cat back down thinking he must have forgotten to put him down. He gets downstairs to the basement door, and it's still closed and locked and the other cat is down there. Fine, he must have forgotten to put the one away. So, he locks him down there. Now both cats are down there and JT comes back to bed. About a half hour later, we're both still awake trying to fall back to sleep, when we hear footsteps again. Suddenly, the door flings open and it's the damn cat again! Now, I'm freaking out, and so is JT because he definitely locked the cats down in the basement. So, we check the entire house to make sure there's no one in here, and everything is closed and locked, including the basement door.Chat Icon Chat Icon There is no other way out of the basement, other than that stairwell, and there's no way my 20lb cat could have squeezed through the tiny crack to get out of teh basement. So what the hell is going on in this place??????Chat Icon Chat Icon Anyone care to chime in on this one?

Either the cat figured out how to get the door open, which is possible - or the door doesn't close 100% and the cat is able to bang it open.
We have a door in our house like that, I have to really make sure it is latched. Otherwise, it looks like it's closed and latched, but one push and it opens right up.

It's possible that there is another way out of the basement that you don't know about. Your home is older right? There could be some crawl space or something that the cat found.

OR...he's just Houdini. That stinks that he flat left the other cat down there, though.

He found a crawlspace or something like that. My Mom's cats do stuff like that all the time.

Re: Maybe someone here can help me and JT figure this out.

Well, he did not get the door open because it was still closed and locked, which it's not a handle lock, it's like this weird pad lock thing that you have to close and turn, and the other cat was still downstairs. There really is no other way he could get out of the basement. It used to be an outside entrance to the basement that they enclosed when they added on the den, so now it's inside. It's hard to explain, but we've done enough work to the house that we know it inside and out and there's no where for the cat to squeeze through. Not a single little spot. If there WAS a spot to crawl through, it would lead outside, not to the rest of the house. I'm not saying my house is haunted or anything, I'm just saying it's so flipping weird and it definitely creeped us out!

Maybe he's just sneaking back out as DH is closing the door?

that's what my cat does. We put them in the bathroom and close the door..inevitably one always escapes. It's extremely hard to make sure both of them are really in the there when we close the door. They are very fast.

My cats like to run and head-butt any closed doors until they open (we leave all doors open a crack). We have wall to wall carpeting, so the doors dont open very easily. I swear they are going to give themselves brain damage.....

My cat doesn't head butt but pushes or bangs on the door until it opens. She hasn't mastered the opening of the doorknob yet but she knows how to push. If the door is not closed all the way they can get out. I would set up a camera to catch exactly what he does it might surprise you how smart your kitty is or as a PP said if they might be sneaking past DH while he is closing the door.

I think there must be another way up that you guys don't know about or he is sneaking out before the door is closed. Cats are industrious-they find a way.

yeah sure....so whatever is there can follow my daughter home.
It's bad enough its the kool-aid house with 10000 kids and then our own paranormal.
Superwoman I am not..
Try to keep a straight face and talk logically when your dd asks you if you just saw that ghost pass..
