POLL: Washing Baby Clothes...
I know this has been debated in the past, but I just wanted to revisit the topic with a poll. Will you wash all of the baby clothes before your little one wears them?
I have been back and forth with the idea of washing everything, and I've decided that I'm not going to. I think it's only human to expose the baby to a certain level of "germs" while he/she is young. Part of me still feels like a "bad mommy" because I'm not going to wash the clothes, but my mother didn't do it with me and so on.
Reply to the poll and respond with your thoughts if you'd like!

Re: POLL: Washing Baby Clothes...
My DD is 26 months and I still wash her clothing before she wears any of it. Sure she will be exposed to germs and other disgusting things in her life but why not avoid them where I can...that's JMO. DD doesn't get sick often so I guess we are doing okay.
I will do the same for the next baby.

Re: POLL: Washing Baby Clothes...
Im not one to normally wash clothes before wearing in general but I did wash most of the baby clothes I got. I wanted to fold them and put them away and it just seemed like the right thing to do.

Re: POLL: Washing Baby Clothes...
I wash just about everything before my DS wears it- I've thrown socks on him and stuff before washing them here and there, but for the most part I try to wash everything that touches his skin directly, and I'll do the same for # 2...My DS's take home outfit I didnt wash because we were team , and was going to return the unused outfit - I'm doing the same this time , but the baby won't be wearing it for long ...

Re: POLL: Washing Baby Clothes...
i'll probably wash what i get for the baby shower/what he/she is going to wear in the first few weeks, but after that i think i'll stop - unless the baby has very sensitive skin, etc.

Re: POLL: Washing Baby Clothes...
I don't think it is necessarily about the germs as much as it is the sensitivity of your babies skin. I always wash DS's clothes in Dreft even now before he wears them. ONE time I didn't wash this button down shirt i bought him from ralph lauren - he was 9 mos at that point and i figured it would be ok and i didn't want to ruin it. Well, he had a rash from it for two weeks and the rash was in the exact pattern of the collar and the shirt sleeves! i wouldn't have been happy if he had that rash as a newborn. Just wanted to share b/c I would have NEVER expected that!

Re: POLL: Washing Baby Clothes...
I definitely wash the clothes because ds has sensitive skin. I will put a holiday outfit on him without washing it because I can never iron it as perfect as it comes from the store, but I always put a onesie on underneath the outfit.

Re: POLL: Washing Baby Clothes...
I wash them not because of germs, but because of the chemicals they use on the clothes to "protect" them during shipping and merchandising. ETA: I also wash all of my clothes before wearing, and did so even before I had ds.

Re: POLL: Washing Baby Clothes...
i would say for the first year with DD i washed everything. especially all the NB clothes for the beginning. i felt like you never knew who touched them and what germs were on them. Now that she is almost 2 - i do it sometimes - it depends on what it is. but definately not as much as i did early on.
for DS i plan on doing the same thing.

I DEFINITELY will wash all clothes before wearing not just for our but us as well. I had a friend who worked in fashion/buying and she would tell me ssome gross stuff of what can happen to clothes bofre they reach you....
Remember teh clothes are being made in factories and not all the "conditions" are teh best....

Re: POLL: Washing Baby Clothes...
I'll definitely wash them before baby wears them just because that's what I do for myself, so that's what I'll do for the baby. It's not really a matter of germs for me, but more so a habit. I just hate the way new clothes smell and feel. Besides, I'm sure baby will be exposed to germs in many other ways so I don't really feel like the baby will be missing out on any important germ exposure here. JMO.

Re: POLL: Washing Baby Clothes...
i washed every single piece of baby clothes.every sock, every blanket etc
a newborn's skin is so sensitive and when clothes are in a store, they are thrown all over the place and probably stepped on, tried on and returned..
and i found that certain items had a plastic smell to them, so i washed everything.

I never did. My friend's mom is a nurse and she said it's a marketing ply from Dreft to sell more Dreft
DS never had any kind of reaction from new clothes.

haha, I do agree, its a huge marketing ploy!!!! Not saying that the specifics on which detergent is best is not a marketing ploy, but I will tell you that clothing is indeed treated with all sorts of chemicals including; formaldehyde, rat poision and other insect repellents. So although Dreft may use that info to play up their marketing techniques (of course using fear is a huge marketing strategy), there is some truth to it.

Not only that, but things like jeans have dye in them that will leach onto baby's skin. This BTDT mommy washes everything except socks before DD wears it - and she is a year old.

Re: POLL: Washing Baby Clothes...
I washed all clothes up to 3 months before I had DS. I wouldn't do it again though...only because I had SO much he didn't wear and I wasn't able to exchange them. I haven't washed any of his clothes before he wears them in the longest time.

Re: POLL: Washing Baby Clothes...
I don't wash my own new clothes before wearing (unless it's underwear of course!). But will be washing DD's NB outfits, especially the onesies, like other posters said, not much for the germs, but rather the irritants.
