SA results----freaking out...please help!

Dr told me today that everything checked out fine.......except.....his motility is VERY low (38% instead of 50%). She told me she doesn't think I should see her again----I should just go right to a fertility dr. She said that they'll probably inseminate me. I really wasn't expecting to hear that. I've been crying all afternoon. I am kind of freaking out. I really don't know anything about insemination. Is it pretty successful? Does that produce multiples? Help!!!

IUI (insemination) will only increae your risk of mulitiples if you are stimmed on something like Clomid or injectibles and you produce more than 1 follice; otherwise you have the same chance of twins or more as you would doing it the old fashioned way.

As for success, the rates vary depending on the issue. Since yours is Motility it may help as it will palce the sperm much closer to the egg (right into the uterus), giving it a much shorter trip to where it needs to go!

Take a deep breath! I had the exact same problem with DH and we saw RE did IUI with clomid (low dose) and we got BFP after first cycle. Any questions please feel free to FM me.

DH's motility was in the low 40's (i think 42%) and we got pg naturally after the HSG. Don't freak yet. Your doctor does not know what a fertility specialist will recommend and she shouldn't be making assumptions about what they would recommend.

I kind of disagree with that. I think it was a responsible thing to do, to refer her to a RE. I wish my Dr. had done that from the beginning, that would be have been 6 unwasted months of trying to get pregnant naturally.

Chances are, a RE would do exactly what the OB says they would do.

To the OP That's not the worst number for motlity, so I wouldn't get too upset over it. As long as everything else was okay, you can still get pregnant naturally, it just may take a while longer. Ultimately, it's up to you to decide how aggressive you want to be. In all honesty an IUI (insemination) is really nothing. It's a quick and painless procedure. I found a PAP to be more uncomfortable than an IUI. The only thing the IUI does is just let the sperm bypass the cervix and places them directly into the uterus so they have a shorter distance to travel to the egg. Often times this does the trick for low motility.

I didn't say that it was irresponsible to refer her to an RE, just that her dr should not make assumptions about what an RE will recommend. The OP should get all the necessary testing with an RE to determine if/what the problem is before determining the most approporiate course of treatment.

MrsRbk and I just have a difference of opinion.

To the OP: just try to stay calm until you have more information is all I'm saying. My OBGYN would not do any fertility testing and referred us to an RE. I made myself absolutely crazy with all the "what ifs". I was terribly anxious with all the tests and was devestated at the thought of an IUI. Since all my tests came back normal and DH's SA was below normal for morph and motility I eventually came to terms with the thought of having an IUI. However, my RE said it was still possible to get PG naturally. You just don't know what will happen until you go to the RE.

I know it's easier said than done, but just try to not freak, get all the prelim tests done, and speak to an RE about your options.

I know MrsRbk said an IUI isn't that big of a deal but I also know that hearing it for the first time is upsetting. Someone on the fertility board (I forget her screename) put it very nicely in saying that an IUI is a pretty natural way of getting PG. The doctor is just putting your DH's sperm closer to the target (she said it alot more eloquently than I but you get the idea!).

It can be upsetting hearing something like this for the first time...

But honestly, Hold it together and keep positive... IUI is no biggy! Its actually easier I think... the Drs follow everything, no need for you to calendar, etc... Its done in the Dr office usually, you will need to go in for appts throughout your cycle so they can measure all of your follies, once they are mature they will do the IUI in which they are just putting the sperm where they belong... closer to your eggies... Its not like you cannot still try naturally, its just that extra help on 1 or 2 days when you most need it.
