First night home - question...
Just wondering if anyone has some advice for the "first" night home with our new furbaby. She's a 2 y/o Havanese we've adopted and is crate trained.
I purchased a bed, but not a crate (but could get one today) - we're picking her up around 5:00/6:00 - and was just wondering what the best ways were for us to get into her schedule or vice-versa....
Should I get the crate, and try to put her in there tonight? Should I try to keep her in her own bed tonight?
I know that we shouldn't keep her in OUR bed b/c then she'll get used to it...so I'll have to tempt off DH b/c that's exactly what he wants to do....

I never had a dog but I would venture to guess that you shouldn't change the habits. Get the crate and try the dog in there. You may hear crying but the dog should get used to it if he is crate trained.
Puppies are hard!

I'm going to ask the Fosters what her habits are...and she does come with a full work-up of her habits and such.
I'll get the crate just in case!
She's actually an adult - they "estimated" her age to be 2 - 5.

Re: First night home - question...
My baby is 2 also and crate trained.. Not only would I get her the same exact crate but I would ask for the bedding that was in there and that she has been using... I would give her something familiar to what she is used to.. It may make the transition much much easier... Crates are there comfort zone.. My baby stays in there all day sometimes.with the door open... She loves it.. My dh hates the way it looks and bought her a bed to see if we could change it but she will not go near it.. She hides her bones in it thats about it.. I know its hard to find a spot for it but it will be worth it,..

Thank you so much!!!!! Keeping my fingers crossed that I'm able to get something (blankie/bedding) from her original crate! The foster parents did say she really loves her crate...

Re: First night home - question...
Oh and most important.. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! You are amazing to be adopting this fur baby!!! What a lucky dog!!
Also one more thing.. Take care of her teeth.. Most groomers will brush them for you if you cant do it and scrape off any plaque.. I have a Maltese (very similar breed).. These little dogs have teeth and breath problems expecially if she doesnt like bones.. If you lift up her sides and see the back teeth if they are brown thats not good at all.. You should find agroomer who offers this service.. If not... every vet does it I am sure.. Many many years of happiness!!

I agree with Dilb.
Just a little tip if you didn't already know... dogs like to be part of the "pack" so bringing the crate into your bedroom (if you have room) when it's bedtime might be something to try to make her feel accepted and part of the group.
I"m so excited to hear how your first few days with your new furbaby go!!
Good luck!

Re: First night home - question...
Thanks so much ladies! We happen to be very fortunate to have a vet, trainer, and groomer among our immediate family and friends - so Maddy will be WELL taken care of (from a professional point.)
First thing on Monday - we're taking her to get microchipped, get a full vet visit, and then we're taking her to get groomed, and we won't forget the teeth! Thank you so much again!!!!
We have a rabbit, and she has "control" of the living room where her living quarters are. Maddy will have the bedroom/kitchen and backyard - and we'll slowly introduce her to the living room and Puppy (our rabbit.) We fully anticipate that Maddy will have both her crate and bed in our bedroom w/the door open to the kitchen.
The fosters stated that she slips in a dog-bed in the bedroom, but will go into the crate occasionally - so they recm'd keeping the crate's door open.
Living and learning right???
I really appreciate the feedback, advice, regards, etc. from everyone!!! THANK YOU AGAIN!!!!! (and endlessly)

right, I re-read that. But she'll always be your pup!
You sound like you have everything figured out. Good luck and congrats!
We need more pics. I love doggies. I wish I could have one. It's the only thing I want that I can't have besides a baby! (so far)

Re: First night home - question...
Also something to discuss w/ the groomer: her ears!
I was unaware until my vet told me when we got Oreo, but Havanese do need to get their ears epilated. We have had Oreo groomed a few times already and most do it...one didn't. The vet even did it a couple of times. The hair gets really matted in the ears otherwise and wax and dirt can easily build up and cause infection. Also they have teary eyes, so just wash he face frequently cause it can get icky otherwise.

Thank you so much for the advice. I'm taking her to the groomers w/in the next few days, and will have them note that her ears do not need her hair removed.
Yes, she does have very teary eyes, and I've been using a soft washcloth with warm water and clean it up a bit.
