Episiotomy
Are they common? Do they numb you to cut you and then sew you up again at the end?

Re: Episiotomy
I think they are common
if you get the epidural your numb anyway.
I believe if you dont get an epidural you feel everything...(like, they dont give you a seperate anesthesia) but I could be wrong (my sister didn't get an epi b/c it was too late and she did not receive a local for the sewing up)

Re: Episiotomy
I had one with my first delivery...I had an epidural so I didn't feel anything...they sewed it up after the delivery...with my second I didn't need one but I did tear slightly...they both feel the same when healing up afterwards...

Re: Episiotomy
I didnt' have one but I did tear. I didn't have an epi - if you don't, they may give you a local needle for the stitches - I'm honestly not 100% postiive - i was drugged by the pain, lol

Re: Episiotomy
I had an epidural but still received a numbing shot for the episiotomy. I was still numb when I was stitched up right after the birth.

Re: Episiotomy
I have had two vaginal birhts of 8+ pound babies and did not have an episiotomy. This is part of the reason I use midwives. I don't think they are necessary. I barely had 1st degree tears with my babies.

Re: Episiotomy
I had an episiotomy with my first baby. I only had one because the cord was around his neck and they wanted him out fast. Even though I had the epi they still gave me a shot to numb it before they cut.
I have since had 2 more babies (one baby was a pound heavier than my first baby) and didn't get cut or tear.
I think they try to avoid them now.
