What is the reason that IUIs don't take?

I see that many of you have had multiple ones...the first ones didn't take. Some had success with a 2nd or 3rd but some had to use IVF instead.

Are IUIs worth it? Still don't know what the cause of my IF is. It may be slight PCOS...but the issue is definetely on my end.

So your Dh's SA came back all good?

I don't think there's any clear reason for why it doesn't work. You're only putting the sperm closer to the egg... you're not forcing them together. There could be a problem with fertilization or implantation... anything really!

The stats my RE gave me were as follows:

With Unexplained IF, here’s our options, pregnancy rate, and multiples:

-DO NOTHING: 2%, 1/90
-CLOMID: 5%, 1/10
-CLOMID + IUI: 10-12%, 1/10
-INJECTIONS + IUI: 20-25%, ¼ to 5
-IVF: 50-60%, 1/3 to 4

Good info!

I agree. I think if DH's sperm is good- it's just kind of the luck of the draw.

I got pregnant on my own last year (miscarried) and haven't been able to do it since. I am now about to begin my first IVF cycle.

Re: What is the reason that IUIs don't take?

For us, it was DH's sample was not optimal for IUI. Like the PP said, IUI just gets the sperm to where they have to go. The sperm & egg still have to do the work.

For us, that is what IVF was the answer. With doing ICSI, the sperm don't really have to do the work & fertilization rates are much higher...

Re: What is the reason that IUIs don't take?

IUIs do work. With and without meds. 3 out of 5 unmedicated IUI cycles worked for me and at age 37, that is pretty darn good.

IUI, in my case was necessary as a conduit to get the sperm where it needed to go and not. I have cervical stenosis so no amount of BDing was gonna allow the suckers to swim upstream through what I call my "Hoover Dam." DH's samples were optimal as well.

However, even with an optimal textbook cycle, it still did NOT work two times. I was told that my chances of conceiving through unmedicated IUIs was only about 12 or 15% which was only slightly more than if we were able to conceive naturally at my age.

Like Kissy said, the sperm and egg still have to do the work.
