m/c question...
Hi... I'm not (yet ) a regular poster on this board but have a question. After having a m/c, do they always perform a d&c? My mom was just telling me that my sil was having a d&c today (she had a m/c last fall) and that the dr. never did one. My mom probably didn't hear the whole story and has got me confused!

Re: m/c question...
Not every m/c needs a d&c. I m/c'd naturally at 5w4d's in July. I bled/spotted for about 8 days, then 2 weeks later conceived this baby girl

Re: m/c question...
I passed everything naturally, no D&C needed.

Re: m/c question...

Re: m/c question...
thanks... I didn't think a d&c was always done. My sil just started going to an RE so maybe like pp mentioned, she is having it done for other reasons.

This is true- having a D&C is not always related directly to a miscarriage or losing a pregnancy.. WHen I had my D&C last fall (I too had a missed miscarriage), the woman in the recovery room next to me was a bit older and was having the D&C for some other gynelogical issues ... she hadn't miscarried..
And I do remember before my Mom had her hysterectomy many years ago,she had to have a D&C as well... so there can be some unrelated issues as to why your SIL is having the D&C now
Its always preferable to miscarry 'naturally' and let nature take its course, but sometimes the D&C is necessary (such as in cases where the pregnancy is further along .. you are not physically looking as though you will miscarry on your own...or emotionally, its just to hard to wait to M/C on your own )
Good Luck to her!

Re: m/c question...
no, a D & C is not always needed...I m/c naturally. A D & C is a choice you have if you do not want to wait till it happens naturally.
She may have had complications and that's why she needed it at this point
