Spinoff to SAHM thread
Do you live close to your family or your IL's? Will they be helping you out while you work? Just curious since my family is 1hr away and IL's are 2hrs away. DH thinks that we need to be closer to family but I really love our house, neighborhood, and good school district.

Re: Spinoff to SAHM thread
Nope.. she'll have to go into Day Care when/if the time comes.
I say IF because financially, we can afford me to be a SAHM, but I think for me, I would prefer to take extended leave (6 months), then go back maybe 3 days a week if possible.

Re: Spinoff to SAHM thread
My parents/family are all in Long Island... Dave's parents are about 30 minutes away and so is his sister.
Dave is home 2 days a week (his only days off are Tuesday and Friday)...I THINK i can stay home one day a week, so we'll need daycare for 2 days....

Re: Spinoff to SAHM thread
My parents are 10 min away and my MIL is about 15, but our DC will go to Daycare. - If I can find one that will take him/her only part time - G'ma 1 and G'ma 2 will take a day each ....otherwise, the baby will go full time after my 6 month leave is over. -

Re: Spinoff to SAHM thread
Both sets of our parents are about 45 minutes away, but they aren't available to help us "watch" the kids on a daily basis so he'll be going into daycare when I return to work or we'll have a nanny come to the house.

Re: Spinoff to SAHM thread
I work 3 days a week. We moved 2 years ago to be closer to family, mind you we were only 30 minutes away before. Anyway, we knew when we started a family we wanted to be close. We chose to do this not just for help with child care, which ILs had said they would help with for years before we had DS, but also for the experiences DS would have with his grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. We live with in 10 minutes of my ILs, BIL and his family, 20 minutes from my brother and his family and my other BIL and his family. My Dad and other brother are about 30 mintues away. So DS gets the advantage of seeing his 3 cousins at least 1x a week, 3 more I would say at least 1 every other week, etc. He has such strong bonds with his cousins after only months that I know living close is a great advantage to DS.
With all that said, we bought our first house knowing full well it was a starter house. We planned on staying there no more than 6 years, but wound up moving after 2. In your situation, it might be better to wait and see how you feel after your DC arrives. I will say having family close can be a lifesaver, when DH got food poisioning and I had to take him to the hospital, my ILs were there in 15 minutes to watch DS, the other night I was home alone while DH worked late, and DS got his first fever, my ILs came over to keep me company because DS wouldn’t let me put him down even to pee. I appreciate my ILs so much for all the love and support they give to our family!

Re: Spinoff to SAHM thread
My parents live about 20 minutes away, so they will help as much as possible. My IL's are upstate, so they can't really do much.
I don't know what my work situation is going to be yet.

Re: Spinoff to SAHM thread
I do live close to family. We do a combo of daycare/school and "grandparent time." I would have no problem putting DS into school f/t, but do not love the thought of putting this baby into daycare f/t at 6 weeks during the winter.

Re: Spinoff to SAHM thread
My sis and dad help out babysiting dd on sats. b/c dh and I work. The other two days i work dh watches dd. After this baby is born DH and I will be the only two watching our DC. Daycare is too exspensive for us to do. We are either considering trying to change dhs work schedule so he can give me another day so i can work, or ill go back fulltime and hell go either parttime or be SAHD.

Re: Spinoff to SAHM thread
Mom and Sis will each take one day a piece. Dh's inlaws are really too old and already have other respsonsibilities to other grandchildren and my mom is still a good 15y ears away from retirement, so we will do day care 3 days a week.

Re: Spinoff to SAHM thread
Most of my family lives right here in Sayville and my in-laws are in Holbrook so we are all w/in 15 minutes of each other. My mother will be watching the baby and my sister-in-law and mother-in-law will probably help out too! We are very lucky.

Re: Spinoff to SAHM thread
DH's family lives an hour away. My family lives 2.5 hours away. We just bought a house and have no intention of leaving the area. It would be nice to have family live closer to us, but we're very happy where we are and I'm sure we'll make the childcare situation work. I'm going back to work after 3+ months and will be in daycare. DH and I visited quite a few daycares in the area and were very happy with several of them.
