Maternity Leave/Disability
Typically, when does your doctor tell you to start thinking about going on maternity leave/disability?
I commute from LI to NYC and I'm 26 wks...it's killingme but I can still do it. Come the winter months, I'm not sure I can handle the commute- like around 30 weeks, it would probably start to get rather difficult.
Does the dr. have any say in the matter? Would he give me a note saying I have to stay home?
Anyone with this experience?

IF your company gives maternity leave, typically it's from the time you give birth forward. I think anything before you'd have to use your own personal time that you've accrued. I know my company I get 6 weeks for vaginal birth and 8 weeks for c-section, and only the first 4 weeks are at full pay. The remaining 2-4 weeks considered STD where I'd get 75% of my salary. Anything I take after that is unpaid leave. If I were to go out early, I would have to use my own personal vacation time.
I would think the only way the Dr. has a say in the matter is if there is a medical necessity for you to stop working at 30 weeks.

It depends on your doctor and your circumstances. Some doctors will take you out early if you're having trouble with the commute, but others may not write you a note unless it's medically necessary. Be aware that if you qualify for FMLA and need or ask to go out of work early (assuming the doctor certifies that you're disabled), that could affect the amount of time you can take off after the baby is born.
At my 32 week appointment, my doctor started talking about possibly taking me out of work early, but that was b/c of my blood pressure. I personally hope to work until the end b/c I'd like to get paid my regular salary as opposed to disability and I want as much time home with the baby as possible.

Are you planning on returning to work or taking extended time (unpaid of course)?
