I would find a nice hotel and use their bathroom LOL
We tried to do that when we could.

OK, I do have to clarify.
Hotel rooms had toilets (thank god)
but the restaurants and public toilets generally had holes. If you were lucky, the handicapped room had a toilet.
And the picture i took was of a very Clean one. you can only imagine!!!!
Where in China were you? All of the modern buildings in the major cities have modern bathrooms with toilets. When you get outside of the city, though -- it's that or else just a hole in the floor. It takes some getting used to!
I've been there three times. The first time I traveled outside the city, I was in bathroom shock.

I've seen this in Italy also.
Me, too. I hated them!
Me three!
For China, I expected somethign much much worse!
In the outlying areas, they generally are much worse. In the big cities (Beijing and Shanghai), the more modern buildings (hotels, office buildings, malls, etc.) generally have real toilets. When you go out into the coutry side, though, there are no modern toilets or even anything this nice. After a few days, though, you just get over it.

We were in Beijing, Suzhou, Hangzhou and Shanghai.
Most of the places we went to inculding Resturants had the hole. Occasionally we would find a handicapped Toliet. (which was a normal toliet to us)

I've seen toilets like that in Italy. Quite a surprise the first time.
Yup, I was just thinking that. I bought travel toilet paper and I used it ALL while I was there.
