LH = Luteinizing Hormone
Basically - your menstrual cycle is controlled by different hormones. LH is one of them.
After your period ends, different hormones trigger the development and maturation of the follicles in your ovaries. One of those eggs will be released when you ovulate.
That follicle makes estrogen which is released by your follicles and makes your endometrial lining thicken so it can support a fertilized egg.
The dominant follicle for that cycle makes your estrogen rise which causes LH to be released. The OPKs pick up this surge in LH. While the CBEFM picks up the estrogen AND LH surges.
LH makes the follicle release the egg into the fallopian tube.
Basically the LH surges 24-36 hours before you ovulate. This surge is what is picked up by the OPKs and that's how they help you figure out when you ovulate.
Does that make sense?
