Wardrobe question re: Formal night on Cruise
We're going in on a cruise in December and we've been before but I'm curious to see other people's opinions. What do you wear on formal nights? I've mostly done cocktail dresses in the past, but on one trip I did gowns b/c I happened to find some at Marshalls crazy cheap. This time my mom sent me a gown she found for me which started me thinking about gowns but I'm shopping around for them and they're pretty expensive. I love the look but I've got plenty of cocktail dresses and I'm sure I want to undertake the expense. I should add DH will wear a tux b/c he owns one so he always wears it on cruises if that would impact your decision

Re: Wardrobe question re: Formal night on Cruise
I would never wear a gown on a cruise. Some people don't even dress up. A cocktail dress is perfect.

Re: Wardrobe question re: Formal night on Cruise
On our last cruise there was no formal night and many women wore gowns on the 1st picture night.

Re: Wardrobe question re: Formal night on Cruise
I've worn both a black cocktail dress and a long black dress (not beaded or anything - just plain black.)
I fit in perfectly both times.
I find that depending on the cruiseline, some people get decked out, while some people wear sundresses.

ITA! Really, just about anything goes, really depends on how dressy you want to get.

I agree--most people wear cocktail dresses and that's what I always wear.

I agree - even a dressy top with pants would be fine. If you want to go all out with a gown that's fine too, but not entirely necessary of you don't want to.
people has all types of formal wear on the cruise we went on.

Re: Wardrobe question re: Formal night on Cruise
I think it depends on the cruise
I was on celebrity and wore a fully beaded gown, and some other really pretty dresses

Re: Wardrobe question re: Formal night on Cruise
I only cruise Norweigan and with their Freestyle cruising there really is no formal night. They have an optional one I think but I've never gone to it. But if I were to- I'd wear a cocktail dress- plus it's easier to pack!

Re: Wardrobe question re: Formal night on Cruise
I just came back from a cruise...it really is as dressy as you want to make it. Some women had on gowns, some had dress pants and a nice blouse! I stuck with cocktail dresses and wrap dresses!

Re: Wardrobe question re: Formal night on Cruise
it totally depends on what you feel like doing. if your dh is wearing a tux it might be fun to get really dressed up and even take some of those posed pics they do. i don't know if you plan to sit at a table with others (meaning strangers). in that case just keep in mind that they may be much less dressed up than you. the last time i cruised i noticed they really don't enforce the dress code in the dining room and some people were really casual (like guys not even wearing jackets). in that case it just depends if you care or not!
