Is flea and tick season over yet?
When does the threat of them go away if not already now?

Re: Is flea and tick season over yet?
Thanks D. My Dh said he saw frost 2 mornings ago also...he told me the other day so you are right about that. I was thinking the same thing, I know it's first frost for fleas but I don't know about ticks.
Let me know what your vet says, please!

DOttie had a tick last week.
I think it's after 2 consecutive nights of frost.

Def not - I was walking Teemu and suddenly saw a black dot on his back. It was a tick! This was only two days ago.

Re: Is flea and tick season over yet?
Ticks are active until standing water freezes and stays frozen. As soon as it starts to melt, the ticks are active again.
They are definitely around cuz I had one on me this morning.

Thanks everyone. How easy are ticks to see that you spotted a tick on your dog's neck that easily? Ugh.

Re: Is flea and tick season over yet?
NO WAY!!
I went hiking yesterdy with the dogs and pulled 15 ticks off them. They are bothon Frontline every 25 days!!
We have to go into a deep freeze for a few days for the ticks to go dormant and if we get a few days where it goes above freezing they come back out.
Last winter it wasn't cold enough so we were pulling ticks off in January and February!!
We tick comb them almost everyday because they play in the woods a lot! That is how we get the majority off of them.

So I live OOS, but were supposed to get 1-3 inches of snow tommorow.
Would that be the end of flea season? I live in a city.

15??? How big are they? Are these deer tick or other?
And is the tick comb the same as the flea comb?

this one was just on the fur, not burrowed in, so it was pretty easy to spot. They are bigger than fleas. I always check Teemu's neck, behind his ears - you can usually feel one if they are latched on (especially if they are swollen up - eww).

They are small....Deer ticks. You use a flea comb to get them out and you have to do it carefully. We have a jar with 70% isopropyl alcohol where we drop the ticks into and they die immediately. I usually dump the jar and refresh it every month or so. WE are so use to combing our dogs, both shorthaired that they can be fully combed in under 5 minutes. But we HAVE to do it!

Re: Is flea and tick season over yet?
I just wanted to add that even when it is cold outside it is still recomended that you continue Frontline YEAR ROUND........ Even when the threat of ticks is lowered.

Re: Is flea and tick season over yet?
I do use frontline year round, thanks for the info. Can I ask if you are in a high risk area or do you go into the woods that you find so many ticks on your dog?

I'm not in a particualrly high risk area, my dogs do run in the woods.
If you are only walking your dog on a leash or he/she plays ina fenced yard with no leaves your chances for getting a tick are minimal.
Once they can roam and play in an area where there is a chance that deer or other wild animals have passed the chances for ticks go up significantly.
We have a small wooded are in our backyard and we definitely don't live in the "boonies" and they still get them!
We have never seen tick infestations as bad as this year though.....

Re: Is flea and tick season over yet?
My Vet said to treat all year round if you live in a area w/woods and deer etc.. He said my area is extremely low for tics but high for fleas.. I am going through December.. I guess if you treat all year round thats the best you can do.
