Boy's name (need advice)

We love the name Drew for our Chat Icon. Do you think we should name him Andrew officially but just call him Drew? Is Drew really a nickname? We are argruing this because DH wants everyone to call our son Drew and not Andrew (he isn't too crazy about that name) and I feel like he should have the name Andrew officially so that when he gets older it's more "professional." But now my parents like the name Andrew better and I know they will want to call him that (Dh is already getting annoyed by that). So my question is do you think Drew is a nickname or can be used as a full name? Should we name him Drew or Andrew?

I agree with you about Andrew being more professional. Drew is a great nickname. I would probably use the 2. I have a Victoria and we call her Tori Chat Icon and Victoria.

Re: Boy's name (need advice)

Also my name is Mandy and My mom refused to name me Amanda because she didn't like that name. So I grew up with a "nickname." Honestly it never really bothered me except when people just assume my name is Amanda and start calling me that. However, I do feel like I would like to give him the choice when he gets older. But I'm not so crazy about Andrew either...soooo I have 19 more weeks to go back and fourth on this!

My friend has a BIL named Drew, not Andrew.

If you both like it, then name him that Chat Icon

Re: Boy's name (need advice)

I do not think Drew is a nickname-- it CAN be, but I wouldn't feel the need to name my kid Andrew, just to call him Drew because of it.

BUT, if you do name him Andrew-- and choose to call him Drew. Everyone should respect your wishes and do so.

Re: Boy's name (need advice)

i love drew and want that name myslef for our Chat Icon - still battling with DH..

from a teacher's point of view - name him drew if youre not too keen with andrew...b/c he will be called andrew on the first day and it will be on name tags... once his friends see that they might call him andrew and that might annoy your DH...

i know its yrs away - but kids/friends at school totally change names

we too love drew and are considering it if we have a boy! Also it is your decision to make together and if "Andrew" is driving DH nuts already it may only get worse. I am also a teacher and totally agree with this post!

Re: Boy's name (need advice)

Thanks ladies! I happy to hear that most of you think Drew isn't really a nickname. It's true we would only name him Andrew so that he wouldn't have a "nickname" but never would call him Andrew...so I guess that would be silly! Chat Icon

I love Drew- don't think it's a nickname at all. When I taught kindergarten I had a boy in my class named Drew. I will say though that when we gave out the class lists, a lot of parents would ask me if it was really Andrew.

Re: Boy's name (need advice)

I think you can definitely name him Drew as his first name. In college, I had 2 male friends named Drew. I never thought anything of it. So if you like Drew go for it!

I like Drew a lot, but think of it more as a nickname. My friend's brother is named Andrew, but everyone calls him Drew. I would name the baby Andrew.

Although I think Drew can be his full name, I would personally name him Andrew because it gives him more options as he gets older. He can call himself Drew, but if he thinks Andrew is more professional or anything, he has the option.
