What is cord blood banking?
This might be a stupid question but since I have yet to become pregnant and don't know much about babies and all that stuff at this point - I'm wondering what it is... I've seen several commercials on it but they don't explain.
What is it and what are the benefits??

Re: What is cord blood banking?
cord blood banking is when the umbilical cord containing stem cells, etc. is stored and frozen. It is done immediately after the birth of your child. My sister did it.
cord blood and cells have been proven to help fight cancer. So God forbid your child or another child got cancer, the cord blood could be used to help.

Re: What is cord blood banking?
now, it must cost money to "store" the blood - is it expensive?
can other children use my child's cord blood - meaning, if my sister or friend's child was diagnosed w/ an illness - could they use it to help them??
this is interesting - thanks!

Re: What is cord blood banking?
I think my sister said it was about $2500 initially, and then there is a yearly fee. But there are other companies that are cheaper.
I don't know if other relatives could use it. I guess possibly..you would have to check into that.

Re: What is cord blood banking?
I am doing it. It cost $3,625 total up until the child is 18. You can pay it yearly or in one lump sum.
It can be very useful in some medical circumstances, but it remains a bit controversial on how helpful it truly is/will be. With that said, it's like life insurance. Never know if you will use it but if you feel it may be of use and have the $, it's worth it.

Re: What is cord blood banking?
I'm doing it for my twins....It is a lot of money, but DH and I feel if we needed it we would be so upset if we didn't have it.
We hope it's the biggest waste of money we ever spent.

Re: What is cord blood banking?
We did it with DS--the main reason is that at birth is the only time you can store it and the amount of things that could be done with it is still being researched
we figured we hope we never need it--but you never know--it could also help parents and grandparents that have a need for it

Re: What is cord blood banking?
My sister did it for my nephew.... I did a lot of research on it and decided against it..... Instead we are going to make sure the baby receives all of the cord blood before the umbilical cord is cut. SO, after the cord stops pulsating and the baby gets all of the blood back the cord will be cut.
There is a lot of research out there on both views........ Its all a personal opinion!

Honestly, I'm not sure. I don't think so because it can take anywhere from a few minutes to 10 minutes. Usually during this time the baby is on your chest.....
It doesn't hurt to ask your OB, but i'm pretty sure I know what the answer would be
