What's next? *Update 9/13

Thanks for being patient with this newbie to IF and answering my questions!

CD 3 blood work was done today - waiting on results.

HSG is Friday.

SA was done in June.

What do you think the next steps would be - presuming that the blood work and HSG don't show anything abnormal?

At what point is it decided that an IUI would be necessary? What about IVF?

At what point do they call it "unexplained" infertility?

Again, thanks for being patient with me and answering all of my questions! Chat Icon

*Update 9/13:

Bloodwork results came back normal!
HSG was done yesterday and fallopian tubes and uterus look great!

I think most of you said that if these tests came back normal, IUI would likely be our next step.

Do you think they would do an IUI this month? Or do you think they'll ask us to try on our own this month and do IUI next month?

Thanks again! Chat Icon

Re: What's next?

If you are ovulating normally and don't need a push (clomid or a trigger shot, which is what I am doing) then if you and your RE agree I think an IUI would be this month if you didn't ovulate yet.

Here is my schedule for this month (I have PCOS) Friday AF came after my 12 day rx of Provera, tomorrow AM I go into Cornell in the city for CD3 testing, I start my clomid tomorrow night (100mg) for cycle days 3-7 and then on Tuesday I go for an HSG then on Friday I go for an internal sono to check how I am responding to the clomid.

I am going to be monitored very closely this month for ovulation b/c I am doing a medicated IUI w/ a trigger shot.

Hope that helps.

Re: What's next?

If everything comes out normal, then the next step would likely be an IUI. You can do a medicated or an unmedicated IUI. It really is your choice as to how many times you want to try an IUI before you move on to an IVF. Your age will likely play a factor into what your doctor recommends- since you are young, you have more time to try IUIs before moving on to IVF.

DH and I are dealing with "unexplained infertility" and we have been trying for about a year.

This is the "plan" that my doctor and I have agreed on, assuming we are not successful. The first cycle we did Clomid w/ timed BD and it was unsuccessful. This month, I am having procedure to remove uterine polyps.

The next 2 cycles will be Clomid with IUI. Then I will move on to 3 cycles of IUI with injectibles. If still not successful, then I will consider IVF.

My doctor explained to me that fertility treatments are very personal, i.e. if I want to move on to IVF sooner, then I can do that or if I want to continue with IUIs, I can also do that too.

Re: What's next?

not much to add from the above posts, but unless something is found to be wrong, they will most likely start with IUI b/c it is less invasive and less expensive.

Re: What's next?

I agree with everyone...I think they will probably move you to IUI. If they aren't finding anything wrong, they may want to try a post-coital test as well...and then move you to IUI.

Lots of luck!

Re: What's next?

DH and I were unexplained IF because all tests came up with no problems. We did 5 rounds of IUI and ended up getting PG with IVF. Many doctors will recommend trying IUI with or without meds as a first line treatment.
