Husbands who work in the city...
My husband just got transferred to the city...he has been taking the train in, but said that once its closer to my due date, that he will start driving in, so when he gets the call, he will leave right away.
Now this is my second pregnancy, and I've heard that you can go pretty fast (I went decently fast with my first). I've heard of people that have the baby within 45 minutes. Now I know because I am saying this, I am going to have a very long labor ( ) but I am nervous that he is so far away. I know its crazy, but does anyone else feel this way?

DH and I both work in the city - its about a 2 hour commute door to door. If he is at work when labor starts, I will call him right away and I am sure he will get there in time.

my DH works at JFK and i was nervous as well, but we just planned that in case i needed to go to the hospital right away, my mom would take me and i would meet him there. fortunately we don't have to worry about that with a planned C but i was definitely concerned!
i totally get why you are worried, i would just have a "contingent plan" in place

Where do you live?
I don't feel that way at all, but it's probably b/c I'm so used to being in the city - I'm assuming this is all fairly new to your family - DH and I BOTH work in the city, and live in Massapequa, so it's about a 50 min train ride -
I plan to work right up until my due date if I can ........
Honestly, during rush hour, depending where he is in the city and how far he has to drive, he'll probably get home faster on the train than if he drove !!
And the gas, parking and tolls alone is goign to cost him a small fortune - Maybe you can change your plan to let him play it by ear - If you DO go into labor when he's still @ work, he can decide based on the time of day whether he should get on the train, or take a cab - Taking a cab ONE time will end up being a lot less $$$ than him driving in every day anticipating the baby's arrival ..........

I didn't even think about having him take a cab...that's a good idea...I'll have to talk to him about that....if he did decide to drive in, and it was during rush hour, he would just hop on the train, and leave his car at work...I know that it would take longer at that time to drive than to take the train.
And yes, this is somewhat new to us. With his job he can be anywhere on the island or the city (or even Westchester, so I am glad hes not there). But when I was pregnant with my son, he was in Stonybrook, and it was just comforting to know that he was only a car ride away

This is exactly what I was thinking. Commuting in and out of the city via train is really not much different than being stuck on a highway in traffic. He should def. play it by ear as it gets closer, going home by train could end up being a lot faster.

Im sure he will get there in time.. I know its nerve racking.. My DH actually does work in westchester and the bronx and I live far east on the island.I cant really worry about it with My DD he was working in Jersey and we were living here.. I just try not to stress it since I know he will try his best.. My biggest worry right now is they started deploying people from his job down south because of the huricanes and hes next and there gone for a week or more so my luck is thats when something will happen..

Yes had a quick labor with my first and kinda worried about #2 and DH working in the city. I am thinking that most laboring happens at night when we are relaxed. I am hoping to be induced again this time

personally, I think he would be better to keep taking the train,and just taking a car home instead (when you go into labor) of driving into the city. if he works 9-5 teh traffic is a total nightmare

My Dh is an engineer for the LIRR. He had just left for work when I called him. He was home within minutes.
I would imagine with the next one, if the same thing happens, I'll call him, then call my IL's to come get me and to watch DD.

DH works on the island, but for Baby G my BIL worked in the city. We called him when we knew that I was going in for a c-section. He was there right after I went into the OR and was able to see his nephew in the waiting room. If he was DH, and had to come into the OR he would have made it just in time.
He worked in Columbus circle and had to come to Mineola. He took the train & walked to Winthrop.
