I wanted to add- it also matters what you mean by "struggling".
If "struggling" is having to cut back on starbucks coffee, or highlights every 2 months, then i could live with the small sacrifices.
If "struggling" means barely covering the bills, having no savings and stressing over where the grocery money is coming from, then i couldn't live that way.

right now, i would leave, just to get away from my fmil (the F standing for F*ckin mother in law) but i don't think i'd really ever leave.
this situaution is temporary and i know that leaving would not change anything.

I agree with this. I think most people could cut out some things and not struggle quite so much here.
And I have lived in other cities where I didn't know anyone else. I think it becomes more difficult to do that as you get older. It is not always so easy to meet new friends so quickly and can get lonely.
