Heartburn issue...
So I feel like this board has been very "complainy" lately but I need to ask for advice on this...
I have posted about my eating issues during this pregnancy before (never hungry, food s*cks to me blah blah blah). Well the newest thing is that after I finally DO eat, I get awful heartburn. This mostly occurs at night, especially when I lay down to go to sleep, even if I keep myself semi-elevted. It has been so bad the past few nights that I have thrown up from it a few times.
Tums are not my friend...I can barely choke them down and twice THEY have made me throw up from the instant gag-relex they give me.
The only thing that I have found to help is having some milk product, but even that does not completely help.
Any advice? TIA Jen
ETA.. I can totally deal with the heartburn on its own--there are are worse things , but I am mostly concerned with it making me throw up. I still have only gained 2 lbs at 20 weeks and barely eat as it is....

Re: Heartburn issue...
Whenever I had heartburn I took a Pepcid Complete and the heartburn goes away in an instant. I would not have made it through the 2nd trimester without them!!! Feel better!!!

Re: Heartburn issue...
Jen, I feel your pain! I have had countless nights of actually throwing up while I'm sleeping due to the heartburn . I talked to the dr. about it and he said to take Pepcid AC. And, ever since I haven't had a problem. It has been a lifesaver!!! I take one before I go to sleep and I sleep all night long with no problems (minus the traditional waking up to flip over). Talk to your dr to see if you can take Pepcid. Before Pepcid I was taking mylanta in liquid form. That worked for me to, but once I hit the 3rd trimester the heartburn for worse so I changed to Pepcid.

Re: Heartburn issue...
Try the Pepcid AC, take one in the morning and one at night even if you don't have any heartburn. If that doesn't work ask you doctor about Nexium or Prevacid. I started on Nexium about 3 weeks ago and it has helped SO much, I can actually sleep without sitting up.

Re: Heartburn issue...
Ughhhh its the worst!!! I wasn't too bothered by it until the last 3 weeks or so (I'm 38.5 weeks now) but it S*CKS !!! I also used the 75mg Zantac, they really work for me, I know a lot of others use pepcid; maybe ask your doc about taking it prophylactically, after a meal but before the heartburn really starts, that may help a little bit??? Feel better!!!!

Re: Heartburn issue...
I'm actually having the same problem as you, getting sick still from the heartburn even though i'm over 21 weeks. And to top it off, I'm lactose intolerent, so milk is a no go for me. I find pepcid works best, altho it doesn't go all the way away, but usually keeps me from throwing up. Also, don't lay down for a few hours after eating.
Or you can ask your doctor, she prescribed me some pills for it, I haven't fill it yet, so no idea if it works, I'm just hoping it gets better not worse.

Re: Heartburn issue...
I had horrible heartburn throughout the first trimester and part of the second trimester. My doctor said I could take Zantac 75 twice per day. I only took it when it was really bad, but it helped tremendously. Feel better.

Re: Heartburn issue...
Jen-
I had this my entire first trimester. It was so bad that I lost 13-14 pounds and couldn't even drink water or room temp. liquids without it causing heartburn. Tums didn't work, Mylanta didn't work. The only thing that worked for me was acupuncture. I SWEAR it helped. To this day, I still have no desire for food. I eat because my body says it's hungry and I know I need to eat. I never crave anything.
My heartburn is coming back in full force again to the point where I want to start vomiting again. My doctor told me I can take Zantac, which I do when it gets really bad. Otherwise, I make sure I don't eat too late at night and I will take Tums in the middle of the night to help ease some of the discomfort.

Re: Heartburn issue...
I was put on pepcid for reflux because I had it so bad that I was throwing up a lot. I was also eating like 20+ tums a day which was not helping.
Ask you practitioner for somethign to alleviate it. There are a few medications out that are pregnancy safe!

Re: Heartburn issue...
I don't know what to say about the heartburn, but I read in my "What to Expect...." book last night that the hormones that give you heartburns are the same hormones that grow baby's hair. So.....you may end up with a baby that has a full head of hair! So cute!!!
